Short Description
Problem
JAWS 18 and later may be reading more in an Excel table than previous versions of JAWS. In Excel, you can create a table by selecting “INSERT”, then “Table” from the ribbon bar. You can also create a PivotTable for summarizing complex data. In either case, table headers may be designated. Headers can be defined in multiple ways. Starting with version 18.0.2530, JAWS recognizes all the different ways a header can be defined in Excel, and automatically speaks them. This means that when navigating to a cell, you may hear the content of another cell (designated as a header cell) before it speaks the content of the cell that currently has focus. Whether the author of the table intended for the designated cells to be headers or not, you may wish that JAWS only speak the content of the cell in focus.
Solution
How to use JAWS Quick Settings to eliminate automatic row and column header detection:
- Open the MS Excel spreadsheet.
- INSERT+V to open JAWS Quick Settings for MS Excel.
- Navigate to Excel Settings > Workbook , Worksheet and Region Settings > Title Reading .
- Press F6 once to “Define Name Column and Row Titles Override”.
- Select “On For All Files” or “On For The Current File” (see Note below).
- Select OK.
NOTE: If you choose "On For All Files", this affects JAWS header detection for all Excel documents. If this is a concern, you should choose "On for the Current File" and apply this setting to individual files as needed.
