Microsoft PowerPoint 2016, Lesson Two
Use Animation Effects to Fly in Bullet Points
Notice that all the bullet points on the woodpecker slide read without pause. In PowerPoint 2016 the sound of the woodpecker did not play automatically. Let us fine tune this.
EXERCISE: Use slide animation effects to fly in bullet points one at a time. This gives you time to discuss each bullet point without having to remember them if they are all read at once.
- Open the presentation from the prior lesson, and then move to slide two. I have the presentation open in the background, and I will press ALT+TAB to move there. I will press DOWN ARROW to select slide two.
- Press TAB to select the object for the bulleted list.
- Press ALT+A to move to the Animations tab of the ribbon.
- Press S to activate the Animation Styles button in the Animation group of the lower ribbon. A gallery of different choices opens. Focus is on the item, "None."
- Press DOWN ARROW to move to the list of Entrance animations. Focus is on the Appear button.
- Press the RIGHT ARROW to select Fly In, and then press ENTER. The gallery closes, and PowerPoint has added a number to each of the bullet points from one to nine. By default, the bullet points fly in from the bottom of the screen one at a time.
- Press TAB to move focus back to the object for the bulleted list again.
- Press ALT+A once more to move to the Animations tab of the ribbon.
- This time, press O to activate the Effect Options submenu. A menu of choices appears.
- Press ENTER on From Right (R). I pressed CTRL to stop speech there. The menu closes. Focus returns to the object with text bullet points.
Optimize the Animation Effects for the Most Effective Presentation
- First, make sure to select the object with the bullet points if it is not already selected from the last part of the lesson.
- Press ALT+A once more to move to the Animations tab of the ribbon.
- Press C to activate the Animation Pane button in the Advanced
Animation group of the lower ribbon. I pressed CTRL to stop speech again. The Animation Pane opens on the right side of the screen. Focus is on the Play Selected button. All eight of the bullet points are listed here, but they are not visible in the list. They are hidden at this point.
- Press TAB to move to the animation pane list box. JAWS reads the bullet points and some other information.
- Press ENTER to open the Fly In multi-page dialog box for the bullet points. Focus is on the Effect page. Here you can change several options including the direction the bullet points fly in from, sound, and more.
- Press CTRL+TAB to move to the Timing page.
- Press TAB to move to the Duration combo box. The default is for the bullet points to fly in very fast. Change this to fast instead of very fast by pressing UP ARROW.
- Press TAB until focus moves to the OK button, and then activate it with the SPACEBAR. The dialog box closes, and focus returns to the animation pane.
Set a WAV File to Play after a Set Amount of Time
The sound for the woodpecker does not automatically play by default. Let us set it to do so after we have had time to discuss the last bullet point on the slide, Diet.
- Press TAB to move to the animation pane list box. JAWS reads it as Animation Pane list box, on click entrance, fly in, content placeholder, etc. and then reads all the bullet points. JAWS may also read some other information in the task pane (e.g., 1 Content Place... Trigger: PileatedWoodpecker 1 PileatedWood... Seconds 0 2).
- Press DOWN ARROW. Focus moves to the Animation Pane list box click to expand contents button dropdown.
- Press DOWN ARROW. Focus moves to the Animation Pane List box Trigger: PileatedWoodpecker.
- Press DOWN ARROW.
- Press ENTER. The Play Audio multi-page dialog box opens. Focus is on the Effect page.
- Press CTRL+TAB to move to the Timing page. Focus is in the Start combo box, with On Click selected.
- Press DOWN ARROW to select After Previous in the list.
- Press TAB to move to the Delay edit spin box. The default is zero seconds.
- For the purposes of this exercise, type in the number three, for a three second delay. For a real presentation you would set this to give you enough time to discuss the diet of the bird before the sound plays.
- Press ENTER. The Play Audio dialog box closes. The sound may play once more, as well.
- Close the task pane, CTRL+SPACEBAR then C for Close.
- Save your file, and then press F5 to start the presentation. I will press F12 to bring up the Save As dialog. I will change the word "one" to "two," and then I will press ENTER. I will press F5.
- Press SPACEBAR to advance the slide and move through the presentation one bullet point at a time. Three seconds after the Diet bullet point appears you should hear the sound played.
I am going to press ALT+TAB to move back to the lesson. I will press TAB to move to the link for the next page.
