22 Using JAWS and Internet Explorer Currently JAWS is the only application I have running. The first thing I'd like to do is press WINDOWS KEY+M to minimize all applications and make sure that I'm on the desktop. Press WINDOWS KEY+M now. Windows, M The files that I’ll be using for this section on JAWS and Internet Explorer are in two places. I’ll be pointing you to our web site for this learning module. However, the files that I’ll be using are also located on the JAWS CD. This can be useful if you are following along with this tutorial and don’t have internet access. If you want to follow along with the files on your JAWS CD, here’s what to do: Put your JAWS CD in and hold down the shift key for a minute or two so that the automatic install does not come up. Then open Windows Explorer, windows key e, and look for the folder on your cd rom drive called JAWS451 or whatever version of JAWS you have. Open this folder and you will find several subfolders. Move to the training folder and open it. In a subfolder of the training folder you will find a folder called HTML Challenge. In this folder, you can run the HTML Challenge directly off of the CD by moving to the file html_challenge.html and pressing enter. If you want to install the HTML Challenge on your hard drive, move to the file challenge.exe and press enter. Then follow the simple instructions to install it on your computer. OK, now I’d like to open Internet Explorer on my computer. I’ll press the windows logo key, programs, and the letter I to start it on my machine. If you have more than one item beginning with the letter I in your programs menu, you may have to press the letter I several times to find Internet Explorer. Once you do, press enter on it and you’ll be on your way. The first page you open up to in Internet Explorer is called your home page. Many of you will end up at the MSN site, unless you’ve changed your home page. That doesn’t matter at this point, since we’re going to go to the Freedom Scientific web site anyway. Press control o to bring up the open dialog and type in www.FreedomScientific.com Next bring up your list of links and go to the training link. On the training page, with the list of links, choose the link “take the html challenge”, and you will get to the first page of the HTML challenge. Stop speech with control when you get there and we’ll go on from there with the tutorial. After pressing control, demonstrate how to open JAWS help for IE by pressing insert f1 f1 twice quickly. Go through some of the help topics, such as keystrokes. -=-=-= This topic contains listings of all commands JAWS provides for use in Internet Explorer. There are a lot of commands, but you do not need to learn them all to start using Internet Explorer. • If you are looking for just the commands needed to start moving through web pages, visit Navigation Quick Keys.
