WYNN ILM Software Activation

WYNN software requires activation. Activation is an easy, one-step process that can be done online in minutes. Below is an overview of activation for the different versions of WYNN, including Network, Single-user, and Multi-user. This information is included in every WYNN shipment. A more detailed description of the activation process is in the WYNN User's Guide. In addition, you can download a PDF version of the activation instructions here.

WYNN Non-Network Multi-User and WYNN Single-User Software Activation

Software activation is an easy, one-time process that uses a 20-character Authorization number to help Freedom Scientific verify your product’s license. It is the last step you perform when installing your WYNN non-network multi-user (NNMU) or WYNN single-user product. When activating over the Internet, software activation can be completed in a matter of minutes, which then allows you to use your WYNN product

  1. Do one of the following:
    • For the WYNN NNMU program, Authorization numbers are supplied on labels. The label sheets, with 10 labels per sheet, are attached to a letter with instructions. Assign one label to each PC that will use the WYNN program, and enter that Authorization number into the Authorization number edit box when prompted. This will occur when you reach step 5 below.
    • Note: Keep a record of which authorization number is assigned to which computer. This will help if you ever need to contact us about your licenses.
    • For the WYNN single-user program, insert the WYNN Authorization CD into your CD-ROM drive, and choose OK to copy the Authorization number to your PC. Remove the Authorization CD.
  2. Install the WYNN program using the WYNN Program CD.
  3. Install the RealSpeak Solo voices speech software using the supplied CDs.
  4. Start the WYNN application. The first time you start WYNN, the WYNN Activation dialog box appears. There are three major ways to activate your Freedom Scientific product: quickly and independently over the Internet; with assistance from customer support using telephone or fax; or by employing the help of a third party.
  5. To activate using the Internet, choose the Activate button and select the Now, using the Internet (Recommended) option. Choose the Next button and follow the instructions that appear on the screen. (For the NNMU, you must enter a 20-character Authorization number from the supplied labels for each computer that you want to authorize.)

For more information about product activation, including details for activating using telephone, fax, or third party, refer to the following sources:

Network WYNN Software Activation

The Network WYNN installation and activation process requires a one-time setup and configuration of network components, which then permits the installation of the WYNN program onto numerous client computers. To simplify operation, either the WYNN server or a computer on the network is designated as the license server. Its task is to distribute tokens to client computers, thereby eliminating the need to activate each client on the network individually.

To install Network WYNN and activate network components:

  1. Insert the Network WYNN program CD into the server’s CD-ROM drive, and install the Network WYNN software.
  2. Select a computer on the network that will serve as the license server (can be the same computer that holds the Network WYNN components), insert the WYNN Network Authorization CD, and install the license server software.
  3. Activate the license server computer using the Internet.

For example, from the Start menu, choose Programs or All Programs, Freedom Scientific, Network, and Update WYNN X Authorization (where X is Wizard or Reader). Next, choose the Activate button, and select the Now, using the Internet (Recommended) option. Choose the Next button and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. On the WYNN server, create a WYNN user group and configure user permissions.
  5. From each client computer that you want to run WYNN on, browse to the server and run the setup.exe file (located in the WYNN Wizard Eng or WYNN Reader Eng folder) to install the WYNN software on the client computer.
  6. For example: \\file server name\WYNN5nw\WYNN Wizard Eng\Setup.exe.
  7. Note: This can be done remotely.
  8. When complete, insert a RealSpeak Solo CD into each client’s CD-ROM drive, and follow the on-screen instructions. Repeat this step to install additional voices. Remove the CD when complete.
  9. Note: RealSpeak Solo CDs can be copied onto a drive or folder on the server and installed remotely.
  10. You can install the WYNN client on as many workstations as you want. The number of clients that use WYNN simultaneously is limited by the total number of tokens available on the license server. For more information about product activation, refer to the following sources:

Support FAQs

We have developed a list of Frequently Asked Questions below about customizing WYNN or you can also go to our WYNN Support Database Search Page. For more specific questions, please contact us at 800-444-4443 or e-mail WYNN at freedomscientific.com.

  • What is the difference between the WYNN 5.1 updater and the WYNN 5.1 upgrade?
The WYNN 5.1 upgrade is a full product with new features, voices as well as CDs and documentation. Please contact our sales team for pricing information. To install the upgrade on a computer, the previous version of WYNN must first be uninstalled from that computer.

The WYNN 5.1 updater is a free, downloadable module that installs the 5.1 features on top of the existing WYNN 5.0 stand-alone version. Users will not need to remove WYNN 5.0, because the 5.1 updater installs just the new features and modules on top of WYNN 5.0. It does not include any of the new voices.

This information is summarized in the following table.
Product Free or Purchased? Use for which version of WYNN Includes new features? Includes new voices? Uninstall previous version first? Install from CDs or download Network?

When to use the WYNN 5.1 Updater.
You should use the WYNN 5.1 updater only if you already have WYNN 5.0 installed. The WYNN 5.1 updater will not work with any versions of WYNN except 5.0. The updater is only available for the stand-alone version of WYNN (not the Network version). Download the updater if you want all the new features in WYNN 5.1, including reading hyperlinks while hovering, auto-completion of Web addresses, support for reading digital talking (DAISY) books, and enhancements to WYNN's homophones features. Since the updater does not include the new voices, you should only download the updater if having these voices is not important to you. IMPORTANT NOTE: You should install any AT&T voices that you want to use with WYNN before installing the 5.1 updater, since you cannot install them once you have used the updater. All previously-installed voices will be available for use with WYNN after you use the 5.1 updater.

When to purchase the full 5.1 upgrade.
You should purchase the WYNN 5.1 full product upgrade if you have any version of WYNN prior to 5.0. That includes version 4.0, 3.5, 3.1, 3.0, and earlier. If you have one of these versions, you cannot use the updater and must order the full upgrade. Customers who have Network WYNN should also purchase the upgrade. You should also order the upgrade if, in addition to the new features in WYNN 5.1, you want to have the new RealSpeak Solo™ voices. RealSpeak Solo from Nuance is recognized as the most human-sounding speech synthesizer. Again, the new voices are only available with the upgrade. SPECIAL NOTE: The WYNN 5.1 upgrade from 5.0 is available for a special price of $35.00 if purchased by December 31, 2006. For prior version upgrades, call for pricing.

How to install and use the free updater.
You can download the WYNN 5.1 updater at http://www.freedomscientific.com/lsg/products/WYNN_Updater.asp and follow the directions there. You must have WYNN 5.0 already installed on the computer that will use the updater. IMPORTANT NOTE: You should install any AT&T voices that you want to use with WYNN before installing the 5.1 updater, since you cannot install them once you have used the updater. All previously-installed voices will be available for use with WYNN after you use the 5.1 updater.

What do you do if you installed the WYNN 5.1 free updater, and now want the new RealSpeak Solo voices from Nuance?
You can purchase and install the WYNN 5.1 upgrade at any time, including after you have installed the updater. If you have WYNN 5.0 and purchase the WYNN 5.1 upgrade by December 31, 2006, you can take advantage of the special introductory price of $35.00 for the full upgrade including all the new voices.

If you have installed the WYNN 5.1 updater and now want to install the upgrade, you should first uninstall WYNN 5.1. The uninstall process will remove the updated components plus the original WYNN 5.0. This two-part process does not require extra steps from the user. The process removes WYNN without affecting the installed voices, including the AT&T Natural Voices. After removing WYNN, you must reboot your computer before installing the full WYNN 5.1 upgrade. Once your computer is rebooted, insert the WYNN 5.1 program CD and follow the prompts to install, just as you normally would. The install process installs RealSpeak Solo voices in several languages. You can then install any additional RealSpeak voices you want. When you are done, you will have both AT&T and RealSpeak Solo voices available for use with WYNN. These voices can be found in the Voice field of the Speech Settings dialog when you have SAPI 5 Voices selected as your Synthesizer. To see the list of non-English voices, you may need to change the selection in the Language field.

Back to FAQs

  • If the page I scanned didn't turn out well, what modifications can I make?
You can start by using the "Scan for Accuracy" setting in the Scan menu. This setting takes longer, but uses the highest degree of accuracy. You can also try adjusting some of the settings in the Scanning Settings property page, found on the Settings menu. Specifically, try adjusting the contrast. Some types of paper, such as glossy paper, have better scanning results with different levels of contrast.

If you are missing letters from the beginning or end of each line, you may not have the book correctly placed on the scanner. Make sure to line up the edges of the book with the edge of the scanner's glass plate. This can also occur if you fail to press down firmly on the book's binding when you are scanning it. You need to press the book's spine as flat as you can.

If you scan a page and WYNN is not reading the columns correctly, deselect the Recognize Columns (in the Scan menu), then try re-scanning the page.

Finally, if certain words are consistently mis-recognized, you can "teach" WYNN to correct those words using the OCR Correction feature. Go to the Advanced menu and choose "OCR Correction" from the list. In the dialog box, type in the word WYNN did not recognize correctly, then enter the correct spelling for the word. WYNN will automatically substitute the correct word the next time it scans. If you want the corrections to go into the document you have open, press the "Apply to Current Document" button.

Back to FAQs

  • How can I modify WYNN for test taking so that some of the tools are not available?
Use WYNN's 'Teacher Lockout' feature to lock a student or other user out of certain features. The lockout features are the Dictionary, Thesaurus, Spell Checker, Word Prediction, Web, and E-mail. Teacher Lockout is found on the Advanced menu item. Using Teacher Lockout, you can restrict student access to one or more functions during test taking. Teacher lockout is valid until the teacher unlocks the workstation, or until WYNN is restarted.

Back to FAQs

  • How does WYNN work on a network?
Network WYNN is a network-enabled version of WYNN. Just as with the stand-alone product, Network WYNN comes in two versions: Network WYNN Wizard, and Network WYNN Reader.
  • Network WYNN consists of three parts: the license server, the WYNN server, and the WYNN client. The WYNN server and license server can be installed on the same machine.
  • The license server controls who can access the WYNN server. The license server issues tokens to requesting clients. The token will activate WYNN and allow the client to connect to the WYNN server. The number of tokens that can be issued depends on how many license seats were purchased. When the license server issues all of its tokens, subsequent requesting clients will not be able to activate WYNN. After a user logs off and the client releases its token to the license server, the license server will be able to issues that token to another client.
  • The WYNN server contains the user settings and files. A client, after receiving a token from the license server, can connect to the WYNN server to access the user’s settings and files. Users can connect to their files from any client.
  • The WYNN client application runs on each individual client workstation. When a person logs on to the WYNN client, the client requests a license token from the license server. After the token is issued the WYNN client is activated and can connect to the WYNN server. When the user logs out of WYNN, the client releases the token back to the license server for other people to use.

  • How do I customize a toolbar?
You can create your own personal toolbar, with the buttons you most commonly use on it. Use the Customize Toolbar item in the Settings menu to do this. WYNN will display a list of all available tool bar buttons, with a brief description next to them. Select the buttons you want from this list, then check the box called 'Show Custom Toolbar.' The Custom toolbar replaces the standard WYNN rotating toolbar. To go back to the standard toolbar, choose Show Default Toolbar.
