WYNN 2 ~ In Depth What You Need Now ! from Freedom Scientific Blind Low Vision 11800 31st Court North St. Petersburg, Florida 33716-1805, USA http://www.freedomscientific.com/wynn This manual was written and edited by Arkenstone, Inc., a nonprofit maker of information access tools for people with visual and reading disabilities. Arkenstone was a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Manual Credits: Kasey Arnold-Ince For Trademark and Copyright information, see page 135. Acknowledgments Arkenstone gratefully acknowledges the role of many people and organizations in the development of WYNN. The support of IBM Special Needs Systems, and the contribution of IBM's Robert B. Mahaffey were invaluable. We also benefited from the guidance and advice of such respected individuals as Katherine G. Butler, Ph.D., Syracuse University Research Professor at the School of Education - Communication Sciences and Disorders; and the dedicated educators working within the Disabled Students' Program at the University of California at Berkeley. WYNN is the brainchild of Roberta G. Brosnahan, Arkenstone's Chief Operating Officer. As a speech pathologist and mother of two children with learning disabilities, Ms. Brosnahan recognized the value of a software reading tool for people with reading challenges. Her energy and enthusiasm brought the WYNN project to fruition. Table of Contents INTRODUCTION GETTING STARTED How to Install WYNN What If I need help? WYNN lets you open a document file and hear it read aloud. Or, you can scan a page using a flatbed scanner, and read that aloud. Once you open a file, WYNN lets you alter the way WYNN presents the file on the screen as well as the way WYNN reads it to you. Best of all you can even edit both document and scanned in pages! Or, create a document from scratch with WYNN! Using WYNN's edit mode, write and revise your document, then correct typing errors using WYNN's spell checker. When you're done, proofread the document by having WYNN read it aloud to you. For easy reference, insert notes and bookmarks into your document, highlight selections, or look up words in the dictionary. It's all possible with WYNN. Who Can Use WYNN WYNN is a productivity tool, designed to help people read and write more easily, comprehend more efficiently, and study more effectively. The WYNN installation not only installs the program and creates folders for user documents and settings, but also checks to see if you have a sound card and scanner. Note: Your scanner and sound card or speech synthesizer must be properly installed and working before you can use them with WYNN. To install WYNN, follow these easy steps: 1. Place the WYNN CD in your CD-ROM drive. WYNN automatically starts the installation process. 2. Follow the Windows Installation prompts to install WYNN. If, for some reason, WYNN does not automatically start the installation process, follow these steps: 1. With the WYNN CD in your CD-ROM drive, open the Windows START menu on the task bar. 2. Select RUN. 3. In the entry field, type in the name of your CD drive (usually d:\), followed by the word SETUP (for example, d:\setup). 4. Press the OK button in the RUN dialog box, or press the Enter key. 5. Follow the Windows Installation prompts to install WYNN. You can exit the WYNN Installation program at any time, simply by pressing Cancel. If you have any difficulties running WYNN after you have installed it, check the chapter in this manual titled Frequently Asked Questions, to see if we address your problem. If you haven't already done so, be sure to install your scanner software and scanner interface card (if appropriate) before using WYNN to scan pages. How to Start WYNN Once you install WYNN, the WYNN icon will appear on your desktop. Simply double click on the icon to start WYNN. The WYNN Log In Each time you start WYNN, the program welcomes you with the Log In dialog box. This dialog box asks you to identify yourself. The first time you Log In, type in your name. The next time you Log In, WYNN includes your name on the list of users and you can select it either by typing it in, or by mouse clicking on the arrow next to the sign-in field, then clicking on your name. When you first log In, WYNN will open using standard voice and screen presentation settings. As you get to know WYNN, you may change some of the settings to suit your individual needs. If you like, you can save these settings, so that WYNN will always open using the settings you like best. Later, when you log In, WYNN will automatically open the last document you were using. What If I need help? WYNN provides several types of help: * Tool Tips are floating information boxes for each tool bar button. They give a slightly expanded description of the button's function. To access them, just move your mouse cursor onto the button. In a few seconds, the tool tip will appear. * Status Bar Help messages are short descriptions of each menu item. They appear at the bottom of the screen, to the left, on the status bar, when you move your mouse cursor to a menu item. As you move the cursor through the menu, the status bar will update with a new message for each item. * What's This? provides floating information boxes in dialog boxes. These boxes give a slightly expanded description of each of the features in the dialog box. You can access What's This? in one of two ways. Move your mouse cursor to the item for which you want help, then click the right mouse button. In a few seconds, the gray What's This? box will appear. Click on this box with either mouse button, and the help box will appear. Or, if the dialog box has a question mark symbol ("?") in the upper right corner, click on it , then move your cursor to the feature you want described and click on that. In a few seconds, the help box will appear. * WYNN Help topics allows you to read sections of the manual on-line. Access this Help from the Help menu or Help tool bar button. * WYNN's README file gives you the latest technical information. The README file is located in the main WYNN directory, usually c:\WYNN\Readme.rtf, and in your WYNN Help directory, usually c:\WYNN\help\readme.rtf Or you can access it through the Technical Help section of WYNN's on-line Help. USING THE TOOL BARS For a quick reference guide to the Tool Bars, refer to Using WYNN, which is included in your WYNN package. You can easily operate WYNN using the rotating Tool bar located at the top of the screen. There are actually four Tool bars, which cycle when you press the Next button. Each Tool bar has several color-coded buttons on it. The buttons are labeled with their name, and each has an accompanying tool tip, which gives a slightly expanded description of the button's function. If a button is grayed instead of brightly colored, that means the button is not currently available. When you first launch WYNN, some buttons will not be available. Once you open or scan in a document, additional buttons become available. Some WYNN buttons change once you press them, to give you an alternate option. These are called toggle buttons. Only one option shows on the toolbar at a time. For example, if you press the Read button to begin reading, the button changes to the Pause button, which, when pressed again, allows you to stop reading. All toggle buttons will be noted. WYNN is a Windows program, and many features are familiar to Windows users, including the cursor, the insertion point, the mouse cursor, dialog boxes, and caption buttons. * The cursor is a visual on-screen element that indicates your exact position in the document. In many programs it looks like a vertical line in the text. WYNN, however, uses a "spotlight cursor." The Spotlight is a brightly colored block or outline that accentuates a portion of the on- screen text. Within this spotlight, a single word is set off using differently colored text. This differently colored text is the cursor. When reading using WYNN, the cursor will be the word currently being read. * The insertion point is a flashing on-screen element that indicates the position in the document where text will be entered when you are typing. (In many programs, the insertion point and the cursor will be the same.) * The mouse cursor (or mouse pointer) is the on-screen graphic that represents the position of your mouse. It is often depicted as an arrow. Place the mouse cursor over an on-screen button and press the mouse. * Dialog boxes are on-screen windows that open containing some combination of buttons, check boxes, and entry fields listing various choices. You can select and activate an action, or close the dialog box without selecting an action. * Caption buttons are the three buttons located at the top right corner of the screen. These are the standard Windows icons for minimize, maximize, and close. If you press these icons while WYNN is open, you minimize, maximize or close WYNN. Please note that if you're using WYNN Reader, some tool bar buttons will be grayed to indicate that they are not available to you. File Management Tool Bar (Blue) This is the File Management tool bar, which is color-coded blue. On this tool bar you will find buttons that help you scan into, open, close, save, and print files. There is also a button that lets you choose how WYNN displays a scanned page. Next: Press this button to switch to the next tool bar. Read: Press this button and WYNN reads the open document aloud, moving the cursor along as it reads. This button is an alternate, or toggle, for Pause. Pause: Press this button to stop WYNN from reading aloud. This button is an alternate, or toggle, for Read. Write: Press this button to switch, or toggle, from Read-only mode to Edit mode. When you start WYNN, you are in Read-only mode. Press Write and you switch to Edit mode. Once you have selected Edit mode, you can type directly into the document on the screen. Many word processing conventions will work in Edit mode, such as the delete key and the backspace key. Use Edit to make changes in a word processing file, or on a scanned page. Or use Edit to write an original document from scratch. This button is an alternate, or toggle, for Read-only. Read-only: Press this button to switch from Edit mode to Read-only mode. When you start WYNN, you are in Read-only mode. This button is an alternate, or toggle, for Write. Other Document: Press this button to switch between two open documents. Note: You can have no more than two documents open at the same time. Scan: Press this button to begin scanning the page you have placed on the scanner. If you do not have a scanner installed, this button will not be available. Place the page on the scanner first, then begin scanning. While the page is being scanned, a dialog box informs you that WYNN is processing the page. To interrupt scanning, you can press the Cancel button on this dialog box, however, all other buttons and menu items will be unavailable. There may be a slight delay before WYNN interrupts the scanning process. WYNN keeps you posted on the progress of the scanning procedure with a message in this dialog box, and describes the page's orientation on the status bar - the area at the bottom left side of the screen. Once scanning is done, WYNN displays the scanned page on your screen in Text View. When you scan subsequent pages using this button, they are automatically inserted after the page your cursor is on. Note: if you're using WYNN Reader, this tool bar button will not be available to you. Text View: Press this button to display only the text from the page, without graphics, line art, tables, columns and other elements that affect how the page looks. In Text View, you can modify the way WYNN presents the text on the screen using the green Visual Presentation tool bar, or modify the actual text of the file, using the yellow Writing tool bar. WYNN automatically selects this View. You can change to Exact View using the Exact View button (see below). This button is an alternate, or toggle, for Exact View. Exact View: Press this button to display the page on the screen just as it is in the original document. This would include any graphics, line art, tables, columns and other elements that affect how the page looks. While in Exact View, you can read the page, change text and background colors, and Zoom in and out, but you cannot edit the text or modify the way WYNN presents the text on the screen. Some study tools will also be available in Exact View, like the dictionary and spelling functions. To make modifications, you must switch to Text View (see above). You cannot select Exact View if you are reading a text, word processing or other electronic file: this item is only available for files containing scanned pages. Note: when you open a file, it will open in Text View first. You can change to Exact View using this button. This button is an alternate, or toggle, for Text View. Note: this button is available only if you are viewing files with pages scanned using WYNN Wizard. A Note about Exact View and editing: If you scan in a page, then edit the page in Text View (see previous entry), when you read the page using Exact View, the text on the screen may not match the text WYNN reads aloud. This is because WYNN reads aloud using the Text View version of the page. If you have made simple corrections, the difference will be minor. But, if you significantly modified the text, the discrepancy may be noticeable. Therefore, whenever you select Exact View for a page you have edited, WYNN will open a dialog box that warns you that "the Exact View may not match the Text View you have edited." Check Box: * Check "Do not show this message again for this document" if you do not wish to receive this warning each time you move between Text View and Exact View. Button: * Okay closes the dialog box. New: Press this button to create a new document. When you press New, WYNN opens a document. You can type into this document, or scan pages into it, and save it under a new name. Open: Press this button to open a new document. Note that you cannot have more than two documents open at a time. If you already have two documents open, WYNN will ask if you want to close the document you are not currently using, then open the requested document. When you press Open, WYNN opens the standard Windows Open dialog box with a list of available files in your personal folder. WYNN is capable of opening most files, including Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, ASCII, Text, and RTF files, as well as files you have previously scanned and saved. Note: when you open a previously scanned file, it will open in Text View. You can change to Exact View using the Exact View button (see above). Entry fields: * Click on the file you want to open, or type the name in the "File Name" field. Buttons: * The Open button opens the selected file. Cancel closes the dialog box without opening a new file. A note about opening files: if you create files using a word processing program or other application, those files will be saved in the appropriate location for that application. This will probably not be the same place that your WYNN files are stored. You can open files stored in other locations (including floppy drives) by using the "Look In:" field in the Open dialog box. Close: Press this button to close the document you are currently reading. When you press Close, WYNN asks you if you want to save any changes you have made to the document. These changes include edits and additions, mark-ups inserted into the document (highlighting, bookmarks and notes) and general settings changes (font size, color). However, if you have scanned in additional pages, WYNN automatically save these when you close. Save: Press this button to save the document you are currently reading without closing it. When you press Save, WYNN automatically saves the document. Save As: Press this button to save a copy of the current document under a new name. You can also use this button to choose the file type. The default file type is the Arkenstone (.ark) format, which saves any changes or mark-ups you added to the document in WYNN, such as bookmarks, notes, highlighting, etc. It also saves the Exact View of scanned pages. The other formats only save the actual text - WYNN mark-ups will be omitted. When you select Save As, WYNN opens the standard Windows Save As dialog box with a list of files. Print: Press this button to print the document. When you select Print, WYNN opens the Print dialog box. The printed copy of your file will reflect the text size, font and spacing choices you have selected. If you are using a color printer, your highlighted text will print in color. If you do not have a document open to print, this item will not be available. This feature is only available when displaying a document in Text View. You cannot print the Exact View of a document. Entry fields: * The "Name" entry field in the Printer section indicates which printer is currently selected. To select a different printer, type in the name or select one from the list using the arrow. * The "Pages" entry field in the Print Range section lets you type in the page range you want printed. * The "Number of Copies" entry field from the Copies section lets you print multiple copies. Enter the number of copies by typing it in or using the arrow. Options: The Print Range section offers five ways to determine what part of the document gets printed. Click on the option you wish to choose. * All Pages prints the entire document. * Pages allows you to select a range of pages. You can only select Pages if you have more than one page in the document. * Selected Text Only allows you to print the selected section of the document. You can only choose this option if you have selected text. * Highlight Text Only allows you to print the highlighted section of the document. This is text highlighted with WYNN's highlighting tool. You can only select this option if you have highlighted text. * Text Notes Only allows you to print the document's text notes. You can only select these options if you have included notes in the document. Buttons: * OK sends the print job to the printer and closes the dialog box. * Cancel closes the dialog box without sending the print job. Visual Presentation Tool Bar (Green) This is the Visual Presentation tool bar, which is color-coded green. On this tool bar you will find buttons that let you determine how WYNN presents the document page: the size of the text, spacing, and margins, and the type of font used. There are also buttons to select specific combinations of text and background colors, change the size of the cursor, or mask out portions of the page - all to make it more readable for you. Note: some features in this tool bar are only available when displaying a document in Text View. Size: Press this button to choose the size of the document text. Each time you press Size, the size of the font increases, until it returns to the original setting. As WYNN cycles through the options, the text on- screen reflects the new setting. Larger point sizes mean bigger characters on the screen. Line Space: Press this button to adjust the amount of space between each line of text. Each time you press Line Space, the amount of space between lines increases, until it returns to the original setting. As WYNN cycles through the options, the text on screen reflects the new setting. Word Space: Press this button to adjust the amount of space separating each word. Each time you press Word Space, the amount of space between words increases, until it returns to the original setting. As WYNN cycles through the options, the text on screen reflects the new setting. Margins: Press this button to adjust the amount of blank space at the right and left sides of the document page. Each time you press Margins, the amount of space on each side increases, until it returns to the original setting. As WYNN cycles through the options, the text on screen reflects the new setting. Larger numbers mean more blank space on each side of the document page. Font: Press this button to determine the type of font used for text on the document page. When you press Font, WYNN cycles through several fonts. As WYNN cycles through the options, the text on screen reflects the new setting. Color: Press this button to choose a specific combination of text and background colors to make the page more readable. When you press Color, WYNN cycles through the available color combinations. As WYNN cycles through the options, the text on screen reflects the new setting. Mask: Press this button to determine which type of masking to use. Masking uses shading to de-emphasize all areas of the text except the area of focus. Note: Masking is only available in Read-only mode. When you press Mask, WYNN cycles through four options: * Line Masking shades the entire page except the line the cursor is currently on. * Sentence Masking shades the entire page except the sentence the cursor is currently on. * Paragraph Masking shades the entire page except the paragraph the cursor is currently on. * No Masking presents the page normally, with no shading. When you are using masking, the Read By button is not available. Read By is only available when you choose No Masking. Read By: Press this button to determine how much of the text WYNN includes in the Spotlight. The Spotlight is a way of accentuating a portion of the text using brightly colored emphasis. When you press Read By, WYNN cycles through five options: * Word * 3 Words * Line * Sentence * Paragraph If you choose Read By Word, the Spotlight includes a single word, and moves word by word. With this option, the Spotlight is essentially the same as the cursor. If, however, you choose Read By 3 Words, the Spotlight includes 3 words, and moves through the document in groups of 3 words. Within the Spotlight, WYNN indicates the cursor - your exact position in the document - as a word in differently colored text. Read by Line, by Sentence, and by Paragraph work similarly to Read by 3 Words, only the Spotlight moves along by line, sentence, or paragraph, respectively. Note: Read By is only available in Read-only mode. Study Tools Tool Bar (Pink) This is the Study Tools tool bar, which is color-coded pink. On this tool bar you will find buttons that give you access to a dictionary and a thesaurus, allow you to add a bookmark, text or voice note to the document, or highlight a section of text. You can also ask WYNN to create a list of highlighted words, or spell a word out loud. Note: some features in this tool bar are only available when displaying a document in Text View. Entry fields: * In the "Selected Word" entry field, WYNN indicates the selected word. * In the "Syllables/Phonetics" entry field, WYNN divides the selected word into syllables, then lists it a second time with diacritical marks, the visual markings that serve as an aid to pronunciation. Buttons: * Read Word reads the selected word aloud. * Read Syllables reads aloud each distinct syllable, breaking the word up by pausing between syllables. * The Close button closes the dialog box. Highlight: Press this button if you want to highlight text. When you press Highlight, WYNN opens a drop-down menu with four options: a green, blue, or pink highlighter, or an eraser. If you don't have any text already selected: When you select your Highlight color, your mouse cursor turns into a "highlighter pen." Drag this over the areas that you want highlighted, and WYNN surrounds the text with a bold color highlight. If you choose the eraser, drag it over an area you had previously highlighted, and it erases the highlighting. You can also choose a color and drag it over an area you had previously highlighted with a different color. WYNN now surrounds the text with the new color highlight. Finally, if you want to highlight a single word, press Highlight, then double click on the word with your mouse. The word will be highlighted. To stop highlighting, press the Highlight button again. If you have already selected an area of text using the mouse cursor or arrow keys: When you press Highlight and choose your highlighter color, WYNN automatically surrounds the selected text with a bold color highlight. If your selected text was previously highlighted and you choose the eraser, it erases the highlighting. If your selected text was previously highlighted and you choose a different highlighter color, WYNN automatically surrounds the selected text with the new color highlight. List: Press this button if you want to create a separate document listing your highlighted text. When you highlight text in a document, WYNN activates this item. Then, when you press List, WYNN opens a drop-down menu with two options: Create by Color and Create in Original Order. If you select Create by Color: WYNN opens a new document with all the highlighted words or phrases in the original document. (If you already have two documents open, WYNN will warn you that it is about to close the one you are not using before creating the List document.) In this new document, WYNN sorts your highlighted text into separate lists by highlight color, each list on a separate page of the document. All items highlighted in green will be listed together, those in blue will be clustered on another page, and those highlighted in pink in yet another. If you select Create in Original Order: WYNN opens a new document with all the highlighted words or phrases in the original document listed in the order that they appear in the original. All text will retain their original highlight color. (If you already have two documents open, WYNN will warn you that it is about to close the one you are not using before creating the List document.) This is the default selection for the Lists drop down menu. WYNN also suggests a name for this new file, using the name of the old document. A list for the document named Harvest.ark would be named Harvest-list1.ark. Once you open a List file, WYNN treats the file just like any other document. All WYNN reading, writing and mark-up tools can be used to read the file, and you can save or print a copy of the marked- up List file. Bookmark: Press this button to insert a bookmark symbol in the document text. The menu then opens a drop-down list of available items. You can also access the menu by pressing the ALT key and then pressing the underlined letter in the menu's name. Once the menus are open, you can also access individual items by pressing the underlined letter. Additionally, any keyboard "shortcuts," such as key combinations (CTRL+C) or function keys (F4) associated with menu items will be listed to their right. If a menu item is grayed out instead of in dark text, it means that item is not currently available. Also, some menus do not appear until you have an open document. When you first open WYNN, some menus and menu items will not be available. Once you open or scan in a document, additional menus become available. Some WYNN menu items change once you select them, to give you an alternate option. These are called toggle items. Only one option shows on the menu at a time. For example, if you select Start Reading to begin reading, the menu item changes to the Stop Reading. If you later select this item, you will stop reading. All toggle items will be noted. WYNN is a Windows program, and many features are familiar to Windows users, including the cursor, the insertion point, the mouse cursor, dialog boxes, and caption buttons. * The cursor is a visual screen element that indicates your exact position in the document. In many programs it looks like a vertical line in the text. WYNN, however, uses a "spotlight cursor." The Spotlight is a brightly-colored block or outline, that accentuates a portion of the on-screen text. Within this spotlight, a single word is set off using differently colored text. This is the cursor. Place the mouse cursor over an on-screen button and press the mouse * Dialog boxes are on-screen windows that open containing some combination of buttons, check boxes, and entry fields listing various choices. While the page is being scanned, a dialog box informs you that WYNN is processing the page. To interrupt scanning, you can press the Cancel button on this dialog box, however, most other buttons and menu items will be unavailable. There may be a slight delay before WYNN interrupts the scanning process. WYNN keeps you posted on the progress of the scanning procedure with messages in this dialog box, and describes the page's orientation on the status bar - the area at the bottom left side of the screen. Once scanning is done, WYNN displays the scanned page on your screen in Text View. When you scan subsequent pages, they are inserted after the page your cursor is on. This menu item duplicates the Scan button on the File Management tool bar. WYNN provides a number of ways to scan and read text, all of which can be set using the Scanning Settings, located on the Settings menu. To learn more about WYNN's scanning options, see the section of this manual describing Scanning Settings (page 89) Scan and Replace Current Page: Select this menu item when you are in a scanned document, to scan a page and have it replace the current scanned page. This option is useful if you are reading a scanned document and come to a page that seems to contain nonsense words or symbols. Scan and Replace Current Page lets you re-scan that page and put it in the right place in your document. Note: if using the 2-page scanning mode, this item replaces both the current and the next scanned pages in the document. Scan and Insert New Page: Select this menu item when you are in a document, to scan a page and have it inserted before the current scanned page. WYNN lets you insert a new scanned page into any document, including a word processing file. You can insert pages at any location in the document. Note: if using the 2-page scanning mode, this item inserts 2 pages before the current page. Recognize Columns: This menu item is selected by default on startup. When selected, WYNN will read down columns of text (like in a newspaper). When this item is not selected, WYNN will read across columns of text (like in a table). Use Recognize Columns to read a standard (single column) page, or to read multi-column pages. Note: changes in this setting only apply to subsequent scans. Color Scanning: Select this menu item to scan pages in color. If you do not have a color scanner installed, WYNN will tell you that color scanning is not possible, and continue scanning in black and white. When you start WYNN, this selection is not checked. If you select Color/Picture Scanning, WYNN scans and displays all colored text, art and photographs in color. However, all black and white text, art and photographs will scan in black and white. Color scanning takes significantly longer, but it is the best option if you want detailed pages and high-quality photographs. Scan pages in color only when you have sufficient time to allow WYNN to process color scans. The results of Color Scanning are only apparent while you are in Exact View, so you must have Exact View checked to use Color Scanning. Also note that you can only do color scanning at 300 dpi resolution. 2-Page Scanning: Select this menu item to scan two side-by-side pages of an open paperback book in a single scan. WYNN will store the pages separately, with separate page numbers. This allows the page numbers in your document to match the pages numbers in the scanned book. After scanning, WYNN will automatically read the first page first, then read the second page. When you start WYNN, this selection is not checked. The following two scanning features are exclusive options. If you select one, the other is automatically de-selected. If you modify settings on the Scanning Settings property page (see page 89), you may find that neither item will be checked. Scan for Accuracy: This menu item is checked by default on startup. When checked, WYNN scans the document using the highest degree of scanning accuracy, along with other special scanning features. However, accurate scanning does take longer. Scan for Speed: This menu item is not checked on startup. When checked, WYNN scans the document faster, but some degree of accuracy may be lost. View Menu This menu allows you to choose which WYNN screen elements are visible, in which format pages are displayed, and determine the scrolling and zoom options. Note: some items in this menu are only available when displaying a document in Text View. Show Exact View: Select this menu item to display the scanned page on the screen just as it is in the original document. This would include any graphics, line art, tables, columns and other elements that effect how the page looks. While in Exact View, you can read the page, change text and background colors, and Zoom in and out, but you cannot make any other modifications or additions to the way WYNN presents the text. Some study tools will also be available, like the dictionary and spelling functions. To make modifications, you must switch to Text View (see below). You cannot select Exact View if you are reading a text, word processing or other electronic file: this item is only available for files containing scanned pages. Note: when you open a file, it will open in Text View first. You can change to Exact View using this menu item. Note: this button is available only if you are viewing files with pages scanned using WYNN Wizard. This menu item duplicates the Exact View button on the File Management tool bar. This menu item is an alternate, or toggle, for Show Text View. A Note about Exact View and editing: If you scan in a page, then edit the page in Text View (see next entry), when you read the page using Exact View, the text on the screen may not match the text WYNN reads aloud. Show Text View: Select this menu item to display only the text from the page, without graphics, line art, tables, columns and other elements that effect how the page looks. While in Text View, you can modify the way WYNN presents text on the screen. WYNN automatically selects this View. You can change to Exact View using the Exact View menu item only if you are viewing files with pages that have been scanned using WYNN Wizard. This menu item duplicates the Text View button on the File Management tool bar. This menu item is an alternate, or toggle, for Show Exact View. Menu Bar: Select this menu item to display or hide the WYNN menu bar. The menu bar is a line of words (File, Edit, etc.) located at the top of the screen that lists all the menus available. You can hide the Menu bar and run WYNN exclusively from the Tool Bar. However, if you hide the menu bar, the only way you can "un-hide" it is to hold down the Shift key, then press the F3 key. Tool Bar: Select this menu item to display or hide the WYNN tool bar. The tool bar is a series of buttons at the top of the page. You can hide the Tool Bar and run WYNN exclusively from the menus. Status Bar: Select this menu item to display or hide the WYNN status bar. The status bar is at the bottom of the page. When the cursor is on a menu item, it gives a brief description of that item. Zoom Page: Changes the display of the scanned page shown in Exact View. Zoom range is from 25% of normal size, to 500% of normal size. Note: this button is available only if you are viewing files with pages scanned using WYNN Wizard. Page Scrolling: Select this menu item to determine how much of the page is moved up when WYNN is reading and gets to the bottom of the page: * One line - WYNN scrolls up one line at a time. * 1/2 screen - WYNN scrolls up half a screen. * 3/4 screen - WYNN scrolls up nearly a full screen. Tools Menu This menu gives you access to a variety of tools including spelling, reference materials, highlighting, bookmarks and notes. Also on this menu is an item that allows you to create a customized tool bar. Note: some items in this menu are only available when displaying a document in Text View. Start Reading: Select this item and WYNN reads the open document aloud, moving the cursor along as it reads. This menu item is an alternate, or toggle, for Pause Reading. Pause Reading: Select this item and WYNN stops reading the open document aloud. This menu item is an alternate, or toggle, for Start Reading. Spell Check: Select this menu item to open WYNN's spell checker. You can check the spelling of a specific word, or of all the words on a current page. This menu item duplicates the Syllables button on the Study Tools tool bar. Dictionary: Select this menu item to open the dictionary. You can look up the meaning of a word by selecting the word, then selecting Dictionary. When you select Dictionary, WYNN opens the Dictionary dialog box. Or, once you are in the Dictionary, you can type a word into the "Selected Word" entry field, and WYNN will look it up. This menu item duplicates the Dictionary button on the Study Tools tool bar. Entry fields: * In the "Selected Word" entry field, WYNN indicates the selected word. * In the "Definition" entry field, WYNN gives the definition of the selected word. Buttons: * Read Word reads the selected word aloud. * Look Up Synonyms shifts you into the Thesaurus feature. * The Read keys read the definition aloud, item by item: the button marked << moves backwards and reads; the >> button moves forward and reads. When you press the >> button, WYNN will read one entire definition. You must press the >> button again to read the next definition. * The Close button closes the dialog box. Check Boxes: * Select Show Full Definition if you want to read the most comprehensive definition, including supplemental or related words. If you do not select Show Full Definition, WYNN gives you the basic definition of the word. Thesaurus: Select this item to open the thesaurus. You can look up a word's synonym by selecting the word, then selecting Thesaurus. When you select Thesaurus, WYNN opens the Thesaurus dialog box . WYNN gives a list of synonyms in the large entry field below "Synonyms." Or, once you are in the Dictionary, you can type a word into the "Selected Word" entry field, and WYNN will look it up. This menu item duplicates the Thesaurus feature of the Dictionary button on the Study Tools tool bar. Buttons: * Read Word reads the selected word aloud. * Look Up Definition shifts you into the Dictionary feature. * The Read keys read the Synonym list aloud, item by item: the button marked << moves backwards and reads; the >> button moves forward and reads. When you press the >> button, WYNN will read one item on the list. You must press the >> button again to read the next item. * The Close button closes the dialog box. Start Highlight: Select this item if you want to highlight text. When you select Start Highlight, your mouse cursor turns into a "highlighter pen." Click and drag this over the areas that you want highlighted, and WYNN surrounds the selected text with a bold color highlight. If you chose the eraser from the Highlight Color menu item (below), click and drag it over an area you had previously highlighted, and it erases the highlighting. Finally, you can choose a different color from the Highlight Color item, and drag it over an area you had previously highlighted with a different color. WYNN surrounds the selected text with the new color highlight. This item is not available if you have selected text. This menu item duplicates the Highlight button on the Study Tools tool bar. This menu item is an alternate, or toggle, for Stop Highlight and Highlight Selection. Stop Highlight: Select this item if you want to stop highlighting text. When you select Stop Highlight, your mouse returns to normal, and WYNN stops highlighting. This menu item is an alternate, or toggle, for Start Highlight and Highlight Selection. Highlight Selection: Select this item if you want to highlight text you have already selected with the mouse or arrow key. When you select Highlight, WYNN automatically surrounds the selected text with a bold color highlight. If your selected text is already highlighted and you choose the eraser from the Highlight Color drop-down menu, it erases the highlighting. If your selected text is already highlighted and you choose a different highlighter color using the Highlight Color drop-down menu, WYNN automatically surrounds the selected text with the new color highlight. This menu item is an alternate, or toggle, for Start Highlight and Stop Highlight. Highlight Color: Select this item if you want to determine the color of your text highlighter. When you select Highlight Color, WYNN opens a drop-down menu with four options: a green, blue, or pink highlighter, or an eraser. Click on the desired highlighter option. The next time you choose Highlighting, either by using the Highlight menu entries, or the Highlight button, WYNN uses the color you have selected. This menu item duplicates the Highlight button on the Study Tools tool bar. List: Select this menu item if you want to create a separate document listing your highlighted text. When you highlight text in a document, WYNN activates this item. Then, when you press List, WYNN opens a drop- down menu with two options: Create by Color and Create in Original Order. Insert Bookmark: Select this menu item to insert a bookmark symbol in the document text . When you select Bookmark, WYNN inserts a bookmark at the current cursor position in the open document. If you have selected Eraser as your bookmark type (see below), when you select Insert Bookmark, your cursor becomes an eraser. Drag the eraser over a bookmark and it erases it. This menu item duplicates the Bookmark button on the Study Tools tool bar. Bookmark Type: When you press Bookmark, WYNN opens a drop-down menu with five bookmark options: a red asterisk, blue circle, green square, yellow triangle, or an eraser. Click on the desired bookmark symbol. The next time you insert a bookmark, either by using the Bookmark menu entry, or the Bookmark button, WYNN inserts the symbol you have selected. This menu item duplicates the Bookmark button on the Study Tools tool bar. Insert Text Note: Select this menu item to insert a text note into the document before the insertion point. When you select Insert Text Note, WYNN opens the Note dialog box. Entry fields: * In the dialog box is a large text entry field. To create a note, simply begin typing the note text. While in this entry field, the arrow keys, insert, delete, backspace and carriage return keys all function like they do when you are in a word processing program, such as Microsoft Word. Buttons: * Read lets you hear the note you have inserted read aloud. * OK saves the note, closes the dialog box, and inserts the Note symbol in the document as a reminder that you have inserted a note at that point. * Paste allows you to insert text copied from the Windows Clipboard into your note. * Cancel closes the Note dialog box without saving the note or inserting the Note symbol in the document. To open a previously created note, double click on the Note symbol. The Note dialog box will open at the bottom of the screen. This menu item duplicates the Note button on the Study Tools tool bar. Insert Voice Note: Select this menu item to insert a voice note into the document before the insertion point. You must have a microphone attached to your sound card to use this feature. When you select Insert Voice Note, WYNN opens the Voice Note dialog box. Buttons: On the right side of the dialog box are two buttons: * OK saves the note, closes the dialog box, and inserts the Voice Note symbol in the document as a reminder that you have inserted a voice note at that point. * Cancel closes the Voice Note dialog box without saving the note or inserting the symbol in the document. On the bottom side of the dialog box are three more buttons: * Play allows you to listen to a note you have already recorded. * Stop tells WYNN to stop playback of the note. * Record tells WYNN to record your voice and save it as a voice note. Bar: * In the center of the dialog box is a recording bar. This recording bar moves from left to right when WYNN is recording or playing back a voice note. To open a previously created note, double click on the Voice Note symbol. The Voice Note dialog box will open at the bottom of the screen. This menu item duplicates the Voice Note button on the Study Tools tool bar. Start Mark-Up Eraser: Select this menu item to remove a bookmark, text, or voice annotation. When you select Start Mark-Up Eraser, your mouse cursor turns into a "mark-up eraser." Drag this over the mark-up that you want erased, and WYNN erases it. You will be asked to confirm when you erase a text or voice annotation. This menu item is an alternate, or toggle, for Stop Mark-Up Eraser and Erase Selected Mark-Up. Stop Mark-Up Eraser: Select this menu item if you want to stop erasing mark-ups. When you select Stop Mark-Up Eraser, your mouse cursor returns to normal and WYNN stops erasing. This menu item is an alternate, or toggle, for Start Mark-Up Eraser and Erase Selected Mark-Up. Erase Selected Mark-Up: Select this menu item if you want to erase a markup you have already selected with the mouse or arrow key. When you select Erase Selected Mark-Up, WYNN automatically erases the selected mark-up. This menu item is an alternate, or toggle, for Start Mark-Up Eraser and Stop Selected Mark-Up. Teacher Lockout: Select this item to lock a student or other user out of certain features, such as the Dictionary, Thesaurus, and Spell Checker. This feature makes it possible for a student to use WYNN while taking a test. Teacher lockout is valid until the teacher unlocks the workstation, or until WYNN is restarted. When you select Teacher Lockout, WYNN opens the Lockout dialog box . Check boxes: When a feature is locked out, it will be grayed on the menu and on the toolbar. * Dictionary locks out this feature, and will also lock out the Syllabify Word item on the menu, and the Syllable button on the tool bar. * Spelling locks out this feature, and will also lock out the Syllabify Word item on the menu, and the Syllable button on the tool bar. * Thesaurus locks out this feature. Fields: * The "Password" field lets you enter a code of between 5 and 8 characters (letters and/or numbers in any combination). * "Confirm Password" requires that you type in the password once again. When you press OK, the items selected using the check boxes will be locked out. To unlock those items, open Teacher Lockout and re-enter the password. Note: If you forget your password, simply exit WYNN. When you restart WYNN, the locked features will once again be available. Buttons: * OK saves the password and locks out the selected items, then closes the Lockout dialog box. * Cancel closes the Lockout dialog box without saving the password or locking out selected items. Customize Tool Bar: Select this item to create your own personal tool bar, with the buttons you most commonly use on it. When you select Customize Tool Bar, WYNN opens the Customize dialog box. Fields: * The "Available Buttons" list, on the left side of the dialog box, displays all available WYNN tool bar buttons, with a brief description next to them. * The "Custom Tool Bar," on the right side of the dialog box, displays all the buttons you have placed on your personal tool bar. Options: * Show Custom Tool Bar displays your new tool bar. If you have not created a customized tool bar, this option will not be available. Now press the Add button, and Read moves from the Available Buttons list to the Custom Tool Bar. Try it again with Scan. The Scan button moves to the Custom Tool Bar, immediately under Read. You can keep adding buttons to the Custom Tool Bar, up to the limit of twelve buttons. Once a button is added to the Custom Tool Bar, it is removed from the Available Buttons section. If you want to place a button in a specific position, first click on the button in the Custom Tool Bar section that you want to have immediately before it. This button becomes shaded with gray. Now select the button you want to add from the Available Buttons list and press the Add button. WYNN adds the new button immediately after the gray-shaded button. If you want to remove a button from your Custom Tool Bar, simply click on the button you want to remove, for example, Read. The Remove button activates. Now press the Remove button, and Read moves from the Custom Tool Bar back to the Available Buttons list. You can remove all buttons from the Custom Tool Bar this way, but you cannot remove any buttons from the Available buttons list. Using Add and Remove, experiment with button placement, until you have created a tool bar that meets your specific needs. You can also use the standard Windows CTRL and SHIFT keys to select more than one button at a time, then press Add or Remove to include or delete them from the Custom Tool Bar. If you want to display your new tool bar, remember to select Show Custom Tool Bar before exiting the dialog box. Change Speech Driver: Select this item to change the speech synthesizer used with WYNN. You must have two or more speech drivers loaded to use this option. When you select Change Speech Driver, WYNN opens the Speech Driver dialog box. Fields: * "Speech Driver" opens a list of the speech synthesizer drivers you have installed. Use the mouse or arrow keys to make your choice. Buttons: * OK saves the new speech driver settings and closes the Customize dialog box. * Cancel closes the Customize dialog box changing the speech driver. Settings Menu This menu allows you to save, retrieve, or delete settings files, and to modify WYNN's Speech, Visual, Scanning, General, Masking, and Differential Color settings. Whenever you start WYNN, it loads the settings file called Default. If you want WYNN to load your settings each time you run the program, you should save them in the Default settings file. Note: some items in this menu are only available when displaying a document in Text View. The individual Settings items all open expanded dialog boxes that are called property pages. There is one page for each of the six categories (Speech, Visual, Scanning, General, Masking, and Differential Color). These pages include many different options. In addition, there are four elements shared by all four property pages. They are: All property pages have two elements in common: a preview box, and a set of three buttons. Preview Box: * WYNN demonstrates the changes selected on sample text displayed to the right of the property page. Buttons: * OK saves the selected settings and closes the Properties box. * Cancel closes the Properties box without saving the settings. * Apply saves the selected settings but does not close the Properties box, allowing you to continue to make modifications to other settings. Once you open one Properties box, you can access any other Properties page using the tabs at the top of the screen. Save Settings: Select this menu item to save the current settings. When you make changes in the settings property page, you must save these setting changes in a settings file, or the next time you use WYNN, it will return to the original settings. When you select Save the Settings, WYNN opens the Save the Settings dialog box. Note: if you want your settings to be loaded each time you run WYNN, you should save them as the Default settings file. All users will have their own default settings files. Entry field: * The Settings file field lists all saved settings files. Use the mouse to select a settings file in which to save the current settings. If you chose to save to an existing settings file, WYNN will ask you to confirm that you want to overwrite any previous settings saved in that file. * "Enter New File Name" lets you type in a new name for a settings file. Buttons: * Save saves the settings to the selected settings file. * Cancel closes the dialog box without saving the settings. Retrieve Settings: Select this menu item to retrieve saved settings files, including the Default file, the one WYNN loads whenever it starts, as well as any settings files you have named yourself. When you select Retrieve the Settings, WYNN opens the Retrieve Settings File dialog box. Field: * "The Setting you are now using" lists your current settings file. Entry field: * "Please choose a new settings file" lets you select from a list of available settings files. Use the mouse or arrow keys to select the file. Buttons: * OK activates the settings of the selected file. * Cancel closes the dialog box without changing the settings. Delete Settings: Select this menu item to delete saved settings files. When you select Delete Settings, WYNN opens the Delete Settings dialog box. Entry field: * "Select Settings File" lets you select from a list of settings files. Use the mouse or arrow keys to select the file. Buttons: * OK deletes selected settings file. WYNN will ask you to confirm your deletions. Note: you cannot delete the Default settings file. * Cancel closes the dialog box without changing the settings. Speech Settings: Select this item to open the Speech Settings property page, to change the way WYNN reads out loud . This property page has two sections: Speak How?: determines the type of voice, volume, pitch and inflection of WYNN's speaking voice. Fields: * "Voice" lets you select the type of voice used by WYNN. The speech software shipped with WYNN has five voice options. Other speech synthesizers may have a different number of options. Use the arrow to make your choice. * Language lets you select the language WYNN uses when reading. This option is only available to users that are using a multilingual speech synthesizer. Bars: * Volume lets you choose how loud WYNN speaks, in a range from high to low. Pitch lets you choose how high or low WYNN speaks. * Inflection lets you choose how much inflection WYNN uses. Use the mouse to move the pointer on the bar to the desired position. Note: because the speech software shipped with WYNN provides an appropriate level of inflection, you will not have the option to adjust it. However, changing the inflection level is available for other speech synthesizers. Button: * Test lets you hear your changes before you make them permanent. Speak What?: determines which on-screen elements WYNN speaks aloud. Check boxes: You may "turn on" these four items in any combination, or turn all four on together. * Speak Text speaks the text in the open document. * Speak Menus speaks the entries on all WYNN's pull-down menus. * Speak Tool Bar Buttons speaks the tool tips that describe each tool bar button. * Speak Messages speaks error and other types of messages. Buttons: * The All button indicates that all on-screen elements will be spoken aloud. * The None button indicates than no on-screen elements will be spoken aloud. Sentence Pause: determines the amount of extra time WYNN pauses after each sentence. Fields: * "Pause" lets you select how long WYNN pauses after a sentence. The range is from 0 to 5, with 0 representing no additional pause. Use the arrows to make your choice. When you start WYNN, Pause is set to zero. Zero means WYNN will pause a standard amount of time after each sentence Visual Settings: Select this item to open the Visual Settings property page, to change the way WYNN presents text on the screen. The Visual Settings property page has nine sections: Text Font: determines the type of font used for text on the document page. Field: * Use the arrow to select your choice of type font. Text Size: determines the size of the text. Bar: * You have options ranging from 8 to 72 points. Change the size font by using the mouse to move the size pointer to the desired position, or by using the arrow keys. Larger point sizes mean bigger characters on the screen. Beneath the sizing bar, the current point size is indicated. Font Style: determines whether the font is normal or emphasized. Options: * Normal or Bold. Side Margins: adjusts the amount of blank space at the right and left sides of the document page. Fields: * Use the up and down arrows to increase and decrease the value. Larger numbers mean more blank space on the sides of the document page. Extra Spacing Between: adjusts the amount of space between characters, words, lines and sentences. Fields: * You can either type in the desired number, or use the up and down arrows to increase and decrease the number. Larger numbers means more space. Text Color: determines the color of the normal text. Background Color: determines the color of the background or on-screen page. Cursor Text Color: determines the color of the text that WYNN uses to indicate where the cursor is located within the spotlight. Spotlight Background Color: determines the color of the spotlight. Fields: * You have a list of color options. Use the arrows to open the list and click on your selection. Scanning Settings: Select this item to open the Scanning Options property page, which helps you control the way WYNN scans pages. If you do not have a scanner installed, items on this property page may not be available. Scanning Mode: Use this entry field to select from four different ways to scan. Use the mouse or arrow keys to make your selection. The Scanning mode entry field offers the following options: Entry Field options: * Scan and Read lets you first scan a page, then read it. This is the standard setting -- when you first use WYNN, scanning is set to Scan and Read. This setting is best for quickly reading short documents,. * Large Batch lets you divide the scanning process into two parts: Scanning the page, and Processing and Recognizing the page. Scanning requires your participation to turn the pages. But Processing and Recognition - the lengthier procedure - can be done by WYNN without your involvement. Using Large Batch, you can scan all the pages of a large document - like a book - then instruct WYNN to process the pages while you do something else. You don't have to be present during the processing step. Use Large Batch on any big job to save time. Large Batch gives you several options: you can scan a group of pages, then immediately process them; scan a group, come back later and scan more, then process them; or scan a group, then process them at a later time. * Express Batch is a faster version of Large Batch scanning. Express Batch scans continuously based on your scanning settings, but does not prompt you between scans. You must wait until the scanner head passes the end of the book. It will continue to the bottom of the flatbed, then return to the top. In those few seconds, place a new page on the scanner. The scanner keeps scanning, over and over again, until you press Cancel. Just as with Large Batch, once scanning is completed, WYNN will recognize the pages while you do something else, and gives you the same processing options as Large Batch. Express Batch is best used by a person who's familiar with their scanner, and wants to scan a large document quickly. * Image Only scans the page and saves it as an image file, without performing the recognition process. This setting is useful if you wish to create an image file to be used as a graphic. Scanning Contrast: If you feel that WYNN is not getting a "good scan," and this is affecting how it is recognizing the letters on the page, try adjusting your scanning contrast. Entry Field options: * Automatic Contrast lets WYNN determine the best contrast setting for the page. When you first use WYNN, Contrast is set to Automatic. * Normal Contrast is the standard setting. * Darken Page is useful when the printing on the page is too light. When WYNN reads a light page, letters may seem to "break up," for example WYNN will read "iii" instead of the letter "m." * Lighten Page is a good choice if the letters seem to becoming "glued together," for example, WYNN reads the letter "m" instead of the letters "r" and "n." * The Contrast entry field also includes a series of numbers from 0 to 255. The 0 setting represents the darkest page, and 255 the lightest page. These custom contrast settings may increase the accuracy if you have a page that is outside the range of the other options. Use the mouse or arrow keys to modify the setting. Page Orientation: While the Automatic setting is usually best, if you are doing a number of pages for which you already know the orientation, using the correct orientation setting will speed up the scanning process. The orientation settings described below are for Hewlett Packard scanners. If you have a different scanner, you may have different orientation settings. Entry Field options: * Automatic lets WYNN determine which way the page is situated on the scanner. * Normal means the top of the page is flush with the rear edge of the scanner's glass plate. * Sideways means the top of the page is flush with the right side of the scanner's glass plate. * Upside-down means the top of the page is flush with the front edge of the scanner's glass plate. * Sideways Upside-down means the top of the page is flush with the left side of the scanner's glass plate. Use the mouse or arrow keys to select the page orientation. Scanning Resolution: This setting controls how fine a picture of the page is made by the scanner. Many scanners have a standard setting of 300 dots per inch. However, if you are reading a page printed in very small type and have a scanner that scan at 400 dots per inch, you may get a more accurate scan. The point range for fonts with a 300 dpi scanner is 6 to 24 points; for a 400 dpi scanner, the range is 4 to 24 points. Use the mouse or arrow keys to select the scanner resolution. The setting for color scanning Is always 300 dpi. WYNN will automatically change your setting to 300 dpi before beginning color scanning. Boundaries: This setting determine how much of the page will be recognized by defining the distance from a specific side of the page, and telling WYNN to ignore anything outside that boundary. The standard setting for all four boundaries (left, right, top, and bottom) is zero, which means that the entire page will be scanned and read. However, if you are reading a book and wish to delete the header (which repeats the title of the book on each page), try defining a top boundary of one inch. You'll need to experiment on each book to get the correct setting. Note that any entry less than one inch must be described in a decimal. For example, one-half inch would be "0.5". Entry Field options: * Left, Right, Top and Bottom Boundaries allow you to type in the number representing the size of the boundary. WYNN will ignore anything outside this boundary area. Text Type: Use the mouse or arrow keys to select between Normal and Typewritten or Dot Matrix Text. Pages printed on a Dot Matrix printer or on a typewriter that doesn't use proportional spacing may not scan clearly. Changing the text type may help WYNN to read these pages more successfully. Image Format: Use the mouse or arrow keys to select the format in which an image scanned using Image Only will be saved. Formats include * PCX * TIFF G3 * TIFF G3 Modified * TIFF G4 * TIFF Packbits * TIFF Uncompressed Recognition Language: Use the mouse or arrow keys to select which language WYNN uses to recognize text. This option is useful if the document you are using has text that contains accent marks, umlauts or other characters unique to a particular language. Recognize columns: Check this box to sort your page into columns. When selected, WYNN will read down columns of text (like in a newspaper). When this item is not selected, WYNN will read across columns of text (like in a table). Use Recognize Columns to read a standard (single column) page, or to read multi-column pages. When you start WYNN, this box is checked. Color Scanning: Check this box to scan pages in color. If you do not have a color scanner installed, WYNN will tell you that color scanning is not possible, and continue scanning in black and white. When you start WYNN, this box is unchecked. Keep Exact View: Check this box to tell WYNN to save two versions of any scanned page: the image file (the actual picture of the page) and the text file (the recognized text from the page). Since image files can be very large, save the exact version of the page only if you will be reading the page in Exact View. When you start WYNN, this box is unchecked. 2-Page Scanning: Check this box to allow WYNN to scan two side-by-side pages of an open paperback book in a single scan. WYNN will store the pages separately, with separate page numbers. This allows the page numbers in your document to match the pages numbers in the scanned book. After scanning, WYNN will automatically read the first page first, then read the second page. When you start WYNN, this box is checked. De-Skew: Check this box to correct as much as ten degrees of skew in a crooked page, straightening up to three quarters of an inch for a standard eight-and-a-half inch page. Use this option if you are concerned that the page is on the scanner slightly crooked. It is also helpful when reading documents that have been photocopied, since the text may not be perfectly straight on the page. However, de-skewing will add a few seconds to the scan time. When you start WYNN, this box is checked. De-Speckle: Check this box to correct for a page that doesn't have a clean, clear background, such as one that has been photocopied several times, a newspaper, or text on paper with speckled shading on it. When you start WYNN, this box is checked. White on Black: Check this box to allow WYNN to scan and recognize white text on a black background. This is useful when reading magazines that use light text on a dark background for emphasis. When you start WYNN, this box is checked. Language Analyst: Check this box to improve accuracy on difficult pages. However, this feature may slow the recognition process. When you start WYNN, this box is checked. Uncertain Text: Check this box to tell WYNN to indicate when it encounters a word or character it is unsure about by using the Uncertain Text Marker (see next item). When you start WYNN, this box is unchecked. Uncertain Text Marker: Use this entry field to designate a specific character, such as an asterisk, that will be spoken when WYNN finds a word or character it is unsure about. Type the selected character into the box. When you start WYNN, the Uncertain Text Marker is the Asterisk (*). Express Batch Delay: Use this entry field to set the amount of time between one scan and the next when scanning in Express Batch. Use the mouse or arrow keys to choose between 0 and 5. A larger number gives you more time to turn the pages. When you start WYNN, Express Batch Delay is set to 0. General Settings: Select this item to open the General Settings property box, to change the way WYNN reads to you. The General Settings property page has five sections: Enable Spotlight: determines whether WYNN will use the Spotlight. Check Boxes: * Check the "Enable Spotlighting" box to turn on the WYNN Spotlight. In most cases, you want the Spotlight enabled. If the Spotlight is not enabled, there will be no focal point visible on the screen. This will eliminate the bimodal reading advantages. Create List: determines how WYNN organizes your list files. Options: * By Highlight Color sorts your highlighted text into separate lists by highlight color, each list on a new page of the list document. All items highlighted in green will be listed together, those in blue will be clustered on another page, and those highlighted in pink in yet another. When you start WYNN, List is set to by Highlight Color. * In Original Order lists your highlighted items in the order that they appear in the original. When you start WYNN, List is set to Create Lists Sorted by Original Order. Reading Speed: determines how fast WYNN reads aloud. Bar: * Change the rate of the reading voice by using the mouse to move the rate pointer to the desired position. The options range from 40 to 450 words per minute, depending upon your speech synthesizer. Read By: determines how much of the text WYNN includes in the Spotlight. The Spotlight is a way of accentuating a portion of the text using brightly colored emphasis. Options: Your choices are Read by Word, by Line, by Sentence, and by Paragraph. * If you choose Read By Word, the Spotlight includes a single word, and moves word by word. With this option, the Spotlight is essentially the same as the cursor. * If, however, you choose Read By Line, the Spotlight includes the current line, and moves through the document line by line. Within the Spotlight, WYNN indicates the cursor - your exact position in the document - with an insertion point that precedes a word with differently colored text. * Read by Sentence and Read by Paragraph work similarly to Read by Sentence, only the Spotlight moves along by sentence or by paragraph, respectively. Field: * The Length indicator lets you choose to read by a specified number of words, lines, sentences, or paragraphs. Type a number from 1 to 5 to apply to the Read By options (Word, Line, Sentence, or Paragraph). For example, if you select Read by Word and the number 5 on the Length indicator, the Spotlight emphasizes 5 words, and moves through the document in groups of 5 words. Again, within the Spotlight, WYNN indicates the cursor. Spotlight Type: determines which type of Spotlight to use. The Spotlight is a way of accentuating a portion of the text using brightly colored emphasis. Options: Within the Spotlight, WYNN indicates the cursor - your exact position in the document - with an insertion point that precedes a word with differently colored text. * The Block Spotlight is a colored box that surrounds the emphasized text in the open document. * The Ruler Spotlight is a thin colored line running above the emphasized text coupled with a thicker line running beneath the text. When Ruler is selected, the Spotlight is always set to Read by Line. Spotlight Advance: determines whether the Spotlight moves through the document in the selected increment, or adds onto itself by the selected increment. Options: You choices are Transient and Progressive. * If you select Read by Line, and choose Transient, the spotlight emphasizes the first line and moves the cursor through it. When the cursor leaves the last word in the line, the Spotlight emphasizes the next line. * If you select Read by Line, and choose Progressive, the spotlight emphasizes the first line and moves the cursor through it, but when the cursor leaves the last word in the line, the Spotlight continues to emphasize that line, and also emphasizes the next line. As the Spotlight moves through the document, the emphasized area increases with each new line. Read: determines whether WYNN reads continuously or whether you need to press the Read button each time you complete reading the selected Spotlight increment. Options: * If you select Continuous, WYNN reads from line to line and from paragraph to paragraph until you press the Pause button. The Spotlight moves continuously with the reading. When you start WYNN, Read is set to continuous. * If you select Read by Line, and choose Non-Continuous, WYNN reads the first line and stops. To continue reading, and advance the Spotlight to the next increment, you must press the Read button again. Masking: Select this item to open the Masking property page, to change the way WYNN uses masking. Masking uses shading to de-emphasize all areas of the text except the area of focus. The Masking property box has two sections: Mask increment: determines which type of masking to use. Options: Masking cannot be used in Edit Mode. * No Masking presents the page normally, with no shading. * Line Masking shades the entire page except the line the cursor is currently on. * Sentence Masking shades the entire page except the sentence the cursor is currently on. * Paragraph Masking shades the entire page except the paragraph the cursor is currently on. Mask Color: determines the intensity of color of the masked text and background. Bars: * Both the Text and Background options let you choose the intensity of shading, in a range from lighter to darker. Use the mouse to move the pointer on the bar to the desired position. Differential Coloring: Select this item to open the Differential Coloring property page. Differential Coloring allows you to change the color of specified letters or characters in the document, to emphasize those combinations that may be particularly difficult to "see" when reading the page, for example "th" or hyphens. Fields: * The "Character String" entry field allows you to type in the character or characters WYNN should emphasize. * The "Differential Color" field allows you to determine the color WYNN uses to emphasize the selected string. Use the arrow to make your choice. * The "Preview" field shows you the string using the selected color. * The "Defined Combinations" field lists any established character combinations and their emphasis color. Buttons: * The Add button adds the character combination in the Preview box to the list of Defined Combinations. * The Remove button removes defined character combinations from the list. Here's how it works: First, define the combination of letters or punctuation you want to emphasize. Then choose the emphasis color. Finally add the character/color combination to the Defined list. Once you press OK or Apply, all occurrences of the character combination in the open document will be displayed with differential coloring. Window Menu This menu allows you to work with two open documents at a time. You can also have one help file open, in addition to the two documents. Switch Document: Select this menu item and WYNN switches to display the other document that is open. You can have no more than two documents open at the same time. This menu item duplicates the Other Doc button on all the tool bars. List of open files: Select this menu item to determine which open document is currently on the screen. When you select the number of the file, the new document is displayed on the screen. The previously displayed document is still open, but not displayed. Help Menu This menu gives you access to information for learning and using WYNN. WYNN Help Topics: Select this item to open the WYNN Help topics and read the WYNN In Depth manual on-line. When you select Help Topics, WYNN opens the Help dialog box. Buttons: * This box has buttons listing available help topics. Click on the topic you want to open. Depending upon which button you choose, you may be presented with additional choices. For example, if you choose "Tool Bar Help," WYNN lets you select the specific tool bar for which you want help. * The Cancel button closes the Help dialog box and returns you to your current document. Once you open the Help file, WYNN treats the file just like any other text file. All WYNN reading and Mark-Up tools can be used to read the file, and you can save or print a copy of the marked-up Help file. Note: you cannot edit a Help file. About WYNN: Displays program name, version number and copyright information. WHAT'S ON YOUR WYNN SCREEN? This chapter is a quick introduction to some of the unique on-screen features you will encounter when using WYNN. The figure below includes the WYNN Spotlight and the cursor. Notice how the Spotlight serves to accentuate a portion of the text using brightly colored emphasis, while the cursor indicates the actual location of the cursor: The following figure demonstrates WYNN's Highlighting, Bookmark, Text Note and Voice Note features, as well as the WYNN Spotlight and cursor. Below is an example of WYNN's masking feature. You can adjust the intensity of the masking using the Mask Settings property page. HINTS AND HELPS This chapter gives you practical hints on how to get the most out of WYNN software. If you have ideas, suggestions, or tips that you think might help other WYNN users, please email us at Arkenstone, (info@wynn.arkenstone.org). Later, we'll post the best of these ideas on our website, http://www.wynn.arkenstone.org. Creating a library with WYNN Both individual users and educators can use WYNN to create a library of reading materials. Here are some hints on how to successfully scan books into your library. But first, a few questions . . . Do you need to save the Exact View? A book is a large document. If you save the Exact View versions of each page, the book will take up a lot of space on your computer, and may open slowly. If you don't need to save the Exact View, turn off the Keep Exact View item in the Scanning Settings property page. This will delete the scanned pages, saving only the Text View, which will be a much smaller file. If you do need to save the Exact View - for example, if you want to be able to reference charts or artwork related to the text - consider whether you can divide the document into smaller groups of pages, such as chapters. Scan and save one group into a file, close it, and start a new one for the next chapter. Do you need the page numbers to match? If you keep the entire book in one document, the page numbers in your document will match the page numbers in the original book. However, if you break the book into separate files, each file will start with page one. If you are reading a book for pleasure, it may not matter if the pages in the document match those in the original book. But if you are scanning a textbook, and have been assigned to read the last half of Chapter 3, from pages 45 through 68, having the document pages match those in the original book may be important. Choosing a Scanning Mode Start by opening and naming a new document. Now, go to the Scanning menu and open the Scanning Settings property page. The most efficient way to scan and read a book is by using Large Batch scanning mode. With Large Batch, you scan all the pages, then go do something else while WYNN is recognizing the pages. Later, when recognition is complete, you can read the book. Later, you can graduate to Express Batch scanning, which is a faster version of Large Batch. While Large Batch gives you prompts when it is ready to scan another page, Express Batch skips these prompts. Instead, you must wait until the scanner head passes the end of the book. It will continue to the bottom of the flatbed, then return to the top. In those few seconds, pick up the book, turn the page, and place a new page on the scanner. The scanner keeps scanning, over and over again, until you press Cancel. Other Scanning settings If you're scanning a paperback book and the entire book will fit on the scanner, select 2 Page Scanning, also located on the Scanning Settings property page, or on the Scan Menu. WYNN will store each of the two pages separately, with separate page numbers. And, if you decided that you don't want to save the Exact View, make sure Keep Exact View (also on the Scanning Settings property page) is unchecked. Scanning a book Although WYNN can compensate for up to ten degrees of skew on a page, try to get the book straight on the scanner. Make sure to line of the edges of the book with the edge of the scanner's glass plate. Now, press down very firmly. This is the single most important tip in book scanning. Press the spine down as far as you can for each scan. If the spine is not down far enough, the picture taken of the page will be slightly warped, and WYNN may not interpret the letters in that picture, especially the ones close to the center of the book, correctly. If you scan pages and then later, when reading them, you notice missing letters in the beginning or end of each line, you may not have pressed book's spine down flat enough. Scan all the pages you want for this document. After you have scanned the last one, then press the Cancel button on the Scanning dialog box. WYNN will give you several options: you can immediately process the pages you just scanned; suspend scanning and come back later to scan more; or process pages at a later time. Corrections Once you have processed the pages, you can save them, or read them immediately. If you are an educator saving the book for use by many students, you may want to review the pages in Text View, using WYNN's Edit mode to make correct any processing errors. Or, you can run a Spell Check on the document. Creating assignment pages with WYNN Educators can use WYNN to create course work in several ways. Use WYNN to create materials: Create a document, then save it to your own document folder using Save As. To save the file to another user's folder, use the Log In Different User item on the File menu. * Open the document. * Select Log In Different User. * Select the user's name, or enter a new name. * Select Save As to save the open document to the new user's folder. Use a word processing application to create materials: Create a document, then save it. Start WYNN, and open the document. Remember, if you created a document using a word processing application, that document will be saved in the appropriate location for that application. To find the document when in WYNN, use the "Look In:" field in the Open dialog box. Once you have opened the document in WYNN, save it to your own WYNN folder. Or save it to the WYNN folder of another user, using the steps outlined above. Another way to copy documents from one WYNN folder to another: Use the standard Windows file copy command. First, make sure that the user has a folder created in WYNN. If they do not, log in to WYNN and add that person as a new user. This creates a folder in their name. Then, use the Windows Explorer or My Computer feature on the Windows desktop to copy the files from your folder to the user's folder. The user's file will be located in c:\WYNN\users. For example Meg's folder would be c:\WYNN\users\Meg. WYNN Tricks In addition to the tool bars and menu items, there are other ways to access and use WYNN's features. Using WYNN with the Right Mouse Button You can use the right mouse button as a shortcut to several of WYNN's
