Using the MIMIC with Freedom Scientific Note-Takers Thank you for purchasing MIMIC, a visual display that is used with Freedom Scientific Note-Takers. This visual display allows you to see information written on a note-taker. To connect and use MIMIC, follow these easy steps: Use the appropriate cable to connect MIMIC to the note-taker. TNS-3 cable is used with: Braille Lite M20 Braille Lite M40 Braille Lite 2000 Braille Lite 40 Braille 'n Speak 2000 Type 'n Speak Type Lite BNS-3 cable is used with: Braille Lite 18 Braille 'n Speak Classic Braille 'n Speak 640 Connect the 9-pin side of the cable to the port on MIMIC's back right side. For the Braille 'n Speak Classic, Braille 'n Speak 640, and Braille Lite 18 use the square 8-pin serial port located on the unit's left side next to the AC adapter power port. On the Braille Lite 2000 and Braille 'n Speak 2000, you can use either round 8-pin serial port located on the unit's left side. For the Braille Lite M20, Braille Lite M40, and the Braille Lite 40, you can use any of the two round 8-pin serial ports located on either side of the unit. When connecting MIMIC to the Type 'n Speak, use the serial port next to the power port. For the Type Lite, use the round 8-pin serial port that is on the back side of the unit. This port is labeled in print and in Braille. Braille labels for each port are found on the bottom back side of the unit. Connecting MIMIC to the Braille Lite 18, Braille Lite 40 Braille Lite 2000, Braille 'n Speak note-takers. 1. Enter the note-taker's Status Menu using an ST-SIGN CHORD (DOTS 3-4 CHORD). 2. Type the following commands to configure the Braille Lite note-taker settings: a. B, 9 (DOTS 1-2, 3-5) sets the Baud Rate to 9600. b. P, N (DOTS 1-2-3-4, 1-3-4-5) sets the parity to none. c. D, H (DOTS 1-4-5, 1-2-5) sets the duplex to half. d. DOTS 4-5-6, 2-3-6 sets data bits to 8. e. S, 1 (DOTS 2-3-4, 2) sets the bit to stop. f. H, S (DOTS 1-2-5, 2-3-4) sets the handshake to software. g. T (DOTS 2-3-4-5) then SPACEBAR toggles Grade 2 Translator on. h. G (DOTS 1-2-4-5) then SPACEBAR toggles Interactive on. i. F (DOTS 1-2-4) then SPACEBAR toggles serial port on. 3. Escape the Status Menu using an E-CHORD (DOTS 1-5 CHORD). 4. Press DOTS 3-5-6 CHORD, DOT 1 to turn on the note-taker's Remote Mode. 5. Turn on MIMIC. Connecting MIMIC to the Braille Lite M20 or Braille Lite M40 note-takers. 1. Enter the note-taker's Status Menu using an ST-SIGN CHORD (DOTS 3-4 CHORD). 2. Type the following commands to configure the Braille Lite note-taker settings: a. B, 9 (DOTS 1-2, 3-5) sets the Baud Rate to 9600. b. P, N (DOTS 1-2-3-4, 1-3-4-5) sets the parity to none. c. D, H (DOTS 1-4-5, 1-2-5) sets the duplex to half. d. DOTS 4-5-6, 2-3-6 sets data bits to 8. e. S, 1 (DOTS 2-3-4, 2) sets the bit to stop. f. H, S (DOTS 1-2-5, 2-3-4) sets the handshake to software. g. T (DOTS 2-3-4-5) then SPACEBAR toggles Grade 2 Translator on. h. F (DOTS 1-2-4) then SPACEBAR toggles serial port on. 3. Escape the Status Menu using an E-CHORD (DOTS 1-5 CHORD). 4. Enter the Speech Parameters Menu with an AR-SIGN CHORD (DOTS 3-4-5 CHORD). 5. Press the SPACEBAR until you reach the option "key echo words," then press an E-CHORD (DOTS 1-5 CHORD) to save and exit the menu. 6. Press DOTS 3-5-6 CHORD, DOT 1 to turn on the note-taker's Remote Mode. 7. Turn on MIMIC. Connecting MIMIC to the Type Lite and Type 'n Speak note-takers. 1. Enter the note-taker's Status Menu using the F10 Key 2. Type the following commands to configure the Type Lite and Type 'n Speak note-taker settings: a. B, 9 sets the Baud Rate to 9600. b. P, N sets the parity to none. c. D, H sets the duplex to half. d. SHIFT+DASH sets data bits to 8. e. S, 1 sets the bit to stop. f. H, S sets the handshake to software. g. T then SPACEBAR toggles Grade 2 Translator on. h. G then SPACEBAR toggles Interactive on. i. F then SPACEBAR toggles serial port on. 3. Escape the Status Menu using the ESCAPE Key. 4. Press ALT+0, A to turn on the note-taker's Remote Mode. 5. Turn on MIMIC. The information entered in the note-takers now displays on MIMIC. Part# 440014-001 Rev. B
