This chapter describes how to configure and install the Bluetooth CompactFlash®
(CF) drivers and software onto the PAC Mate.
Note: The following procedures assume use of the Socket Communications
Bluetooth CompactFlash card (BL4508-309 or equivalent), which is available from
Freedom Scientific. This is the supported card and the use of other cards may
produce unsatisfactory results.
Before you Begin
The following is required to operate FaceToFace on a PAC Mate:
- A PAC Mate BX or QX, running software release 2.5 or later
- A USB mini A/B cable
- Socket Communications Bluetooth CompactFlash (CF) card for the PAC Mate
- Freedom Scientific FaceToFace application
- Socket Communications Bluetooth driver software, which is available on
the FaceToFace program and documentation CD
- A Bluetooth ID name for the PAC Mate
- Microsoft ActiveSync
Installing the Socket Communications Bluetooth
Software
The following section describes how to install the Bluetooth software onto
your PAC Mate.
Important: Do not insert your Bluetooth CF card into the PAC
Mate at this time.
- Turn on the PAC Mate and use ActiveSync to establish a Standard or Guest
connection between your PAC Mate and your computer.
- From your computer, insert the FaceToFace program and documentation CD
into the CD-ROM drive on your computer.
- From the Start menu, select the Run command. Browse to the CD, select BTCEeng120J.exe,
and then choose OK to start the installation.
- Unzip the driver
- The Installing Socket Bluetooth Card Software Welcome dialog appears. Choose
Next.
- The License Agreement terms appear. Accept the terms by choosing Yes,
and then select Next to start copying files.
- Choose Yes to install the Bluetooth software into the
default directory.
- Follow the installation instructions on the remaining installation wizard
screens. Select Finish once the Bluetooth CF drivers are
installed.
Configuring Bluetooth on the PAC Mate
This section describes how to set up the Bluetooth software on your PAC Mate.
Important: Do not insert your Bluetooth CF card into the PAC
Mate at this time.
- Following completion of the software installation, the Socket Bluetooth
Setup Wizard automatically starts on your PAC Mate. Select Next.
- Give your PAC Mate a name, for example, "Joe’s PAC Mate," and
select Next. This name is a Bluetooth identifier. It is the name that
will appear when a Bluetooth device searches for other nearby Bluetooth devices.
Note: Freedom Scientific recommends using a unique device name that
is different from the PAC Mate’s current default name, which is Pocket_PC.
In most cases, the device name is pre-filled with the default name in the
dialog. You can find the PAC Mate’s device name by doing the following:
- From the Start menu, choose Settings.
- Choose the System page, select About, and open the Device
ID page.
- If your PAC Mate has fewer than six COM ports free, the “Disable IrDA?”
dialog appears.
Note: Freedom Scientific does not recommend disabling IrDA, since
this makes it impossible to transfer files using the PAC Mate’s infrared port.
Press SPACEBAR to uncheck this item, and press ENTER to select
Next.
- On the next screen, make sure that you select both Bluetooth COM ports.
These ports are labeled as Bluetooth COM (Generic serial) and Bluetooth
COM #2 (Generic serial).
When the COM port screen first appears, you may find that many ports and services
are selected. You may need to unselect several ports in order to make enough
ports available so that you can select both Bluetooth COM ports.
To enable and disable the ports, press TAB to move through the list
of COM ports, and press the SPACEBAR to check or uncheck a port. After
making your selections, select Next.
Note: You cannot disable the Bluetooth Phone port. You must choose
the Bluetooth COM Port in order to use your GPS receiver.
- On the last screen, read the instructions and select Finish.
- Press ALT+CTRL+DELETE (DOTS 1-2-3-4-6-7-8 CHORD) to warm reset your
PAC Mate. This is necessary for changes to take effect.
- Wait for the reset to finish, and then insert your Bluetooth CF card into
one of your PAC Mate's CompactFlash slots.
Note: The first four times you insert the Bluetooth card or restart
your PAC Mate with the card inserted, you will receive a message that indicates
that the operating system has detected a new modem. Press TAB to move
to the Dismiss button and select it.
Making Your PAC Mate Discoverable
After the PAC Mate has reset, and the Bluetooth CompactFlash card has been
inserted and recognized, you must make your PAC Mate discoverable so that other
Bluetooth devices can detect its presence.
- Press JAWS+F11 (F5 CHORD) from the Today
screen to access the Bluetooth icon that appears in the Task Tray.
- Press ENTER to select Bluetooth Transmitting
from the Bluetooth menu.
Note: If you heard the message, “Bluetooth not transmitting,”
press ENTER twice to turn it on, and repeat step 1.
- Press the DOWN ARROW twice to move to the Advanced
Features command, and then press ENTER.
- Press ENTER again to select My Bluetooth Device.
- The Device Manager page appears. Press SPACEBAR
to select the Discoverable option.
- Press ENTER to save and close the page.
