This Quick Start Guide will help you set up your PAC Mate and familiarize you with how it works. What's In the Box? Grasp the sides of the unit so that it rests comfortably in your hands. Use the fingers on your right hand to locate the finger well for the release. To release, pull gently towards the right side of the unit. To attach the PAC Mate Braille Display, remove the drawer from the PAC Mate. Then, on the Braille display, remove the protective cover by pressing down on the finger well in the middle of the display, just above the cells. Next, align the Braille display so that it slides easily into the PAC Mate. Press against each unit until they are firmly engaged. Keyboard Features The PAC Mate QX keyboard consists of six rows of keys with a QWERTY keyboard complete in the first five rows from the bottom up. The bottom row, from left to right, includes: FN, CTRL, Windows Key, ALT, Backslash, SPACEBAR, JAWS Key, ALT, Windows Key, and the Application Key. The 12 function keys follow the ESC Key, which is the first key on the left in the top row. To help you stay oriented, there are three finger bumps on the keyboard's surface, above and between function keys: F4 and F5, F8 and F9, F12 and the PrtSc Key. The arrow keys are in the lower right corner of the keyboard with the UP ARROW in a row above the other three arrows. The keys DEL, HOME, PAGE UP, PAGE DOWN and END are the five keys found along the right border of PAC Mate. JAWS laptop keystrokes have been used where possible and, with the inclusion of the JAWS Key, experienced JAWS users should have no problem getting started. Setting Up PAC Mate: Before you start your PAC Mate for the first time, plug the AC adaptor into a wall outlet and then plug the other end into the PAC Mate’s power jack found on the right back side of the unit. Next, press the on/off switch toward the left to turn on the unit. This is a spring-loaded switch that returns to a neutral position. To indicate that it is on, the PAC Mate uses an audible low-high sound. Pressing the switch toward the right will turn off the PAC Mate and emit a high-low sound. To start using your PAC Mate, you need to know only a few basic commands: ESC (Cancel or ESC) ALT (Menu Bar) Windows Key (Start Menu) Arrow Keys ENTER TAB INSERT+A (Say All) CTRL (Stop Speech) Application Key (Context Menu) INSERT+S, UP ARROW (Increase Volume) INSERT+S, DOWN ARROW (Decrease Volume) These 11 commands are the foundation from which you will become familiar with your PAC Mate. In addition, many of the PAC Mate menus allow first-letter navigation. Installing ActiveSync: With Microsoft® ActiveSync, you can synchronize the information on your desktop computer with the information on your PAC Mate. Synchronization compares the data on your PAC Mate with the data on your desktop PC and updates each computer with the most recent changes. To get started synchronizing, follow these steps: 1. Plug in the PAC Mate using the AC adaptor. 2. Put the PAC Mate Companion CD in your CD drive and follow the instructions to install ActiveSync on your PC. 3. When you are prompted, turn on and connect the PAC Mate to the PC using the USB cable. Once you do this, ActiveSync should automatically detect your PAC Mate and ask you to establish a partnership. Select either standard or guest partnership. Follow these steps if your PAC Mate is not automatically detected and the Add New Hardware Wizard appears on your PC: (This may be necessary for Windows 98 and ME systems.) 1. Remove the Companion CD and put the Documentation CD in your CD drive. 2. Be sure to choose the option that lets Windows automatically search for the new driver. Windows will then find and install this new driver. 3. Once the new hardware is detected, ActiveSync will prompt you to establish a partnership. Select either standard or guest partnership. Using ActiveSync Help To view ActiveSync’s Help on your desktop computer, start ActiveSync, press ALT+H, then select Microsoft ActiveSync Help and press ENTER. The ActiveSync help window contains three pages: Contents, Index, and Find. You can switch between the page by pressing CTRL+TAB. On the Contents and Index page, use your ARROW keys to select a topic or index keyword and then press ENTER to display the topic. Press TAB to move through the links in the topic and press ENTER to follow a link. You can move to the next consecutive topic by pressing the Period Key or move to the prior topic with the Comma Key. To return to the Contents or Index page, press T. The Find page lets you search for specific words or phrases in the help system. To use the Find feature, enter the word you want to search for in the edit field. Press ALT+S to select some matching words to narrow your search or press ALT+C to select a relevant topic, and then press ENTER. The Today Screen: When you turn on your PAC Mate for the first time (or after four hours of inactivity), the Today Screen is active. You can also press the Windows Key, select Today with the ARROW keys, and press ENTER. The Today Screen contains a summary of information you need for the day. Use the arrow keys to move through the items, which include: * Today's Date * Owner Information * Meeting Notification * Mail Message Status * Active Tasks with their Priority * Battery Status Press ENTER on the “Tap here to set owner information” and fill out the form so that your PAC Mate will be identified as yours. Press ENTER on the Date to set the current date, time, and time zone. The remaining items automatically sync when you establish an Activesync partnership. Accessing Applications: To access the applications on your PAC Mate, press the Windows Key to open the Start menu and use the UP or DOWN ARROW to select an application. Press ENTER to start the application. For details on working with applications consult the User's Documentation CD included with your PAC Mate. You can also use the shortcut keys listed below to quickly start any of these commonly used applications. Record INSERT+SPACEBAR, 1 Calendar INSERT+SPACEBAR, 2 Contacts INSERT+SPACEBAR, 3 Tasks INSERT+SPACEBAR, 4 Inbox INSERT+SPACEBAR, 5 File Explorer INSERT+SPACEBAR, 6 FSEdit INSERT+SPACEBAR, 7 FSCalc INSERT+SPACEBAR, 8 To assign a different application to a command, press Windows Key, S, B, ENTER. Refer to "Setting Up PAC Mate" in the User's Manual on the Documentation CD for more information. Setting Up E-mail and Web Content Perform the following to use your PAC Mate to synchronize your e-mail or to update Web content for reading on the go: 1. Start Microsoft ActiveSync on your desktop or laptop PC. 2. Press ALT+T then O on your PC. 3. Press TAB. Use your UP and DOWN ARROW keys to review the available information types. Press SPACEBAR to select the check boxes next to each information type you want to synchronize. * Select the Inbox check box to read new messages you have received within the last three days each time you synchronize. * Select the Favorites check box to synchronize all Web pages in your Mobile Favorites folder in Microsoft Internet Explorer. For more information on using favorites, refer to Internet Explorer’s online help. * Select the AvantGo check box to synchronize your PAC Mate with personalized Web content from AvantGo.com. For more information or to create an account, visit www.AvantGo.com. 4. Press ENTER to save your preferences. 5. Connect your PAC Mate to your PC. Press ALT+F then S to synchronize the information types you selected. 6. To view your e-mail messages, press INSERT+SPACEBAR, 5 to start Pocket Outlook. To view Web pages and AvantGo content, press Windows Key, then I twice, then ENTER to start Pocket Internet Explorer. Press ALT+V, F to display a list of your Mobile Favorites. Choose the content you want to view and press ENTER. Using a Modem 1. Follow the instructions provided by your modem’s manufacturer to connect the modem hardware to your PAC Mate. 2. Next, install the modem drivers. Generally, installing the modem drivers is done with an ActiveSync partnership between your desktop or laptop computer and PAC Mate. 3. Insert the modem installation CD, run the Setup program, and follow the instructions. ActiveSync installs the modem drivers to the PAC Mate. 4. Next, create a new connection so your PAC Mate can connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). To begin, press the Windows Key, then S for Settings. 5. Press CTRL+TAB to move to the Connections page. 6. Press C to select Connections. Press ENTER to open the Connections dialog box. 7. Enter your ISP information and dialing preferences. Refer to "Connecting the PAC Mate" in the User's Manual on the Documentation CD for more information.
