Tiny Firewall application may interfere with using JAWS.
You may experience difficulties when installing and running JAWS with Tiny Firewall from Tiny Software. If you install and run JAWS on a computer with Tiny Firewall from Tiny Software (http://www.tinysoftware.com), you may receive multiple firewall prompts that JAWS does not read. This problem is much more likely to affect the Internet License Manager (ILM) based version of JAWS.
While this problem occurs to some extent with most software firewalls, it is especially persistent with Tiny Firewall. There are two possible solutions:
Solution 1
Disabling the firewall temporarily allows you to install and run JAWS normally.
While JAWS is running, you can adjust your firewall settings to allow JAWS to
run while the firewall is enabled. Do the following before installing JAWS on
a computer with Tiny Firewall:
1. Press WINDOWS Key+M to go to the desktop, then press SHIFT+TAB to move to the system tray.
2. Use the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW keys to select the Tiny Firewall icon, then press the APPLICATION Key.
3. Select Enable-Disable Protection and press RIGHT ARROW. Then, select Windows Security and press ENTER.
Windows Security is one of the four modules available in Tiny Firewall. It is functionally identical to what some other products refer to as "Application Protection." With this module disabled, Tiny Firewall behaves just like any other firewall product, and you can install JAWS without problems. If the firewall activates when you attempt to run JAWS, press and hold the INSERT key before starting JAWS. This starts JAWS in 40-minute mode. In 40 minute mode, JAWS does not search for authorization, which is what triggers the firewall. You can then adjust the firewall settings to allow JAWS to run. After you do this, restart JAWS.
Solution 2
With sighted assistance, you can adjust Tiny Firewall's settings while you are
installing JAWS. The following steps are intended to show the basic actions
for dealing with this particular firewall. Note that some dialog boxes may be
slightly different, depending on your computer's configuration.
1. On a computer with Tiny Firewall, start the JAWS installation.
2. A firewall dialog box appears that contains several radio buttons. Select the Create a New Record for this Application radio button and press ENTER. The installation should now finish properly, with JAWS speaking throughout the process.
3. When JAWS attempts to start at the conclusion of the installation, the Outgoing Connection Alert firewall dialog box appears. JAWS does not read this dialog box.
4. After a brief delay, JAWS begins speaking. A message appears asking if you would like to start JAWS automatically when Windows starts. Choose No for now (you can change this setting later).
5. The JAWS product activation process begins. This dialog box may appear behind the Outgoing Connection Alert firewall dialog box that is still on the screen.
6. Hold down ALT and press the TAB key until you switch to the Outgoing Connection Alert dialog box.
7. Ensure that the Add Rule to Common Configuration check box is selected. Then, select the Apply Permanently radio button.
8. Select the To All Communication radio button and then choose Allow.
9. Tiny Firewall now displays the Application Enrollment dialog box. Ensure that the Create a New Record for this Application radio button is selected and the Add to Group check box is not selected. Then choose the Enroll button.
11. If the JAWS activation dialog box becomes the active window, press ESC.
12. Quit and then restart JAWS. Tiny Firewall displays the Application Being Started by Another Application dialog box. Select the Apply Permanently radio button and then choose Allow.
13. Tiny Firewall displays the Unauthorized File Access dialog box. Select the Apply Permanently radio button and then choose Allow.
14. The TPF Synchronous Event Handler dialog box appears and asks if you want to allow or prevent the remaining Ask User accesses. Select the Allow radio button and then choose OK.
15. JAWS speaks, but may display an authorization error message. Press ESC to close this message if it appears. Then quit and restart JAWS.
16. JAWS starts properly. Several firewall alerts appear in the bottom right corner of the screen, but they close without any additional user interaction.
Note: For more detailed information about troubleshooting JAWS with firewall applications, please reference the JAWS 5.10 help section "Troubleshooting Firewall Software". From the Start Menu, Programs, JAWS, choose Help. Press ALT+N to move to the Index tab page. Type Firewalls. Press ENTER, then F6 to move to the information pane.
This information specifically applies to a limited set of products using Internet License Manager (ILM) based activation, available from Freedom Scientific starting Fall 2004. This information does not affect products using dongle and Quella (3.5" diskette based) authorization methods.
