Questions and Answers
regarding the JAWS 5.0 Upgrade version
You can update JAWS
5.0 by downloading and running the file j500844.exe from the links below.
This update is installed into the same program folder as your existing
JAWS 5.0 version. Because of this, many of the settings you have defined
will not be preserved.
Which settings are
preserved?
- Your choice of
whether JAWS runs automatically at startup.
- Your choice of
whether JAWS runs in the system tray or as a taskbar application.
- Your choices of
Braille displays and speech synthesizers. Specific settings you have
defined are not preserved.
- Any existing PlaceMarkers
or Personalized Web Settings.
- Any application-specific
script, configuration, dictionary, frame, graphics, or keyboard files
that were not created by JAWS.
Which settings are
overwritten?
- Speech and Braille
settings you have defined, such as speech rate, adjustments to Braille
structured mode output, or other default type configuration settings.
- All existing JAWS
5.0 files and settings in the Settings\ENU folder are overwritten in
order to provide you with the most up-to-date scripts. These scripts
include numerous fixes for programs like Office 2003, MSN 6.1 in Windows
2000 and XP, Outlook Express, and so on.
Are my previous JAWS
5.0 files that contain my original settings still available?
The update copies
all of the settings files found in the Settings\ENU folder into the Settings\ENU\SETBCKUP
folder, with the exception of PlaceMarkers and Personalized Web Settings.
Is it safe to copy
any of these files, such as dictionary or graphics files, from the back
up directory after I install the update?
Yes, you can copy
dictionary files (.jdf) or graphics files (.jgf) found in the Settings\ENU\SETBCKUP
folder back into the Settings\ENU folder if you want to continue using
any of your customized dictionary and graphics changes. However, it is
recommended that you do not copy any of the other JAWS settings files,
since overwriting the newer scripts will prevent you from taking advantage
of the script fixes that come with the update.
If you have problems,
it is recommended that you completely uninstall JAWS. Make sure you delete
the JAWS 5.0 installation folder as well. Then, reinstall JAWS 5.0.844.
