For
many items in the database, ScanTalker also provides product
label information that sighted people take for granted, such
as ingredients, preparation instructions, and dosages. Using
PAC Mate commands, you can hear as much or as little information
as you want.
ScanTalker comes
with a CompactFlash™ card pre-installed with databases, including:
- More than 285,000 grocery and pharmaceutical items
- More than 90,000 health and beauty aids
- More than 530,000 general merchandise items
- More than 320,000 audio and video compact discs
With the
omni-directional bar code reader, you need not hold the scanner
stationary over a bar code. As long as the scanner is near
the bar code, the information is gathered and read aloud, regardless
of the position of the bar code.
When you
just need to identify products by name, use the Quick Scan
Mode.
The database
is expandable, so if you don’t find an item, you can
add it. The next time you use ScanTalker, the new item will
be instantly recognized. ScanTalker even comes with labels
to affix to personal items that you add to the database.
ScanTalker
2.0 with the omni-directional scanner works with the PAC Mate
BX and QX series running the 4.0 release or later. The complete
package includes the ScanTalker application and databases on
a 256 MB CompactFlash card, the scanner with cable and USB
adapter, 100 pre-printed bar code labels, and documentation
in print and on CD.'
Note: The
ScanTalker 2.0 update does not enable
the omni-directional USB scanner. PAC Mate 4.0 is required
to support
the scanner.
If you wish to purchase a Metrologic scanner as a separate
item, it is available from a number of vendors over the Internet.
Be sure to look for the Metrologic part number MK3780-61A38,
which is the Model MS3780 scanner with USB. When the
scanner is purchased
separately from a third party, it must be configured to work
with PAC Mate and ScanTalker.
Consult
the Technical Service Notification on this site for assistance
in configuring the Metrologic scanner.
