A Student and his Mother Experience Classroom Success with the PAC MateAlex Follo became known to nationwide audiences in spring when ABC TV's Extreme Makeover Home Edition renovated a house for a blind St. Petersburg, Florida resident. Alex briefly appeared on the show and stole the spotlight. Behind the scenes, he kept the show's host busy and entertained as he enumerated the virtues of the PAC Mate, one of the assistive technology tools that was provided for the resident's new house. During the 2004-2005 school year, Alex and Tammy Follo became believers in the difference the PAC Mate makes for visually impaired students. Alex entered fourth grade, a time when the Florida school system puts extra emphasis on students' writing skills. Alex, who was using a Perkins Brailler, struggled with the large writing workload, along with his other school subjects. Eventually he fell behind in his work and his grades. As soon as Alex started using the PAC Mate, he took off. By the end of the year, he was making top grades. "The comments that came back most were from his teacher," said Tammy. "She said that for the first time, she had access to see what he was doing in the classroom and was able to grade his work in a timely fashion with his peers. Her feeling was that the PAC Mate made all the difference in improving Alex's work and grades.” That kind of success has given Alex and Tammy genuine enthusiasm for telling others what the PAC Mate can do for students and their teachers. On the following pages, you can hear lively discussions by Alex and Tammy Follo about their experiences with PAC Mate in the classroom and the additional benefits the PAC Mate brings to families of students.
