Going the Distance with PAC Mate and the StreetTalk GPS SolutionOn June 12, 2005, when Terry A. Martin entered his first long distance bike ride for a charity event, he was prepared with more than strong determination. He also came armed with a PAC Mate, a mainstream GPS receiver, and Freedom Scientific's StreetTalk™, a GPS (Global Positioning System) solution that makes the Destinator™ GPS device accessible by the blind. For Terry, a 46-year-old visually impaired teacher, having the assistance of his PAC Mate and StreetTalk was critical to his participation in the 40-mile Rochester, NY Tour de Cure, a ride to benefit the American Diabetes Association. The course meandered through country roads and city streets, with many turns. While StreetTalk could not tell Terry to avoid obstacles, it did provide the means, via his PAC Mate's speech synthesizer, to orient him to his surroundings and provide other assistance along the way. We asked Terry to describe his experience with StreetTalk and its Breadcrumb Routes, Favorites, and Points of Interest for two short presentations. The presentations are available in your choice of Flash or DAISY formats. Download the DAISY format, and play it with FSReader for PAC Mate or the FSReader Demo included with JAWS 6.0 or later. Go to the DAISY file download link. The Flash format requires the Macromedia Flash Player. To download the free Macromedia Flash Player, go to the Macromedia Web site download page. Once Flash Player is installed, JAWS users should set their configurations to ignore Flash movies and suppress all Flash movie and page refreshes. They can do this by pressing INSERT+V. Files in DAISY format:Download Terry Martin's sound file about StreetTalk in DAISY format. The DAISY files will download in a single zip file. Please select to download the zip file where you can easily locate it. We suggest downloading it to your desktop. |
