MAGic 8.0 Professional Screen Magnification Software with Speech Free Public Beta Download for Authorized Users of
MAGic NT/2000 Professional
______________________________________________________

New Professional functionality provides a strong software solution for business and educational environments

(St. Petersburg, FL - January 11, 2002) -- Freedom Scientific Inc., a leader in assistive technology products for people with sensory impairments and learning disabilities has posted on its Web site a free public beta of its Windows NT/2000 Professional version of MAGic 8.0 screen magnification software with speech. The link is below for authorized users.

The MAGic 8.0 Professional Edition provides those using Windows NT/2000 Professional operating systems a magnification solution in business and educational environments, and it is compatible with the world's most popular screen reader JAWS® for Windows.

MAGic 8.0 helps people with low vision view information on their computer screen while hearing it through their speech synthesizer. MAGic 8.0 combines state-of-the-art magnification features with a true low vision speech option. The software magnifies the information the person chooses, from two times to 16 times its normal size. The smoothing feature eliminates jagged edges caused by bitmapping when images or characters are magnified on the screen.

With the speech option, MAGic 8.0 gives users the ability to choose information they want read from a computer screen as they navigate applications. MAGic reads the information aloud as users type it-either character-by-character or word-by-word, or they can move the mouse over existing text and hear it. The speech option is particularly helpful when listening to entire paragraphs, email or lengthy documents on the Internet. You can use magnification and speech together or independently.

The easy to understand color-coded user interface, and hot keys that avoid conflicts with Windows® and other software applications, highlight MAGic's list of other features, including:

  • Easy to understand Talking/Large Print installation to get started quickly.

  • Four configurable magnification views to display information.

  • Enhancements to easily locate and follow the mouse.

  • Cursor and mouse tracking to keep the point of focus in view.

  • Tether Mouse to Display brings the mouse into view whenever it is moved.

  • Screen locators give a visual reference on an unmagnified screen and then allows for quick movement to a new location.

  • Inverse Colors feature improves contrast and ease of reading.

  • Quick panning to review documents.

A version of MAGic 8.0 without the speech option is available. Windows XP compatibility is targeted for second quarter 2002.

This Public Beta free download is for authorized users and only should be downloaded on Windows NT or Windows 2000 operating systems. Purchasers of MAGic 6.2 for Windows NT since October 1, 2001 are authorized to download and run MAGic 8.0 Professional Public Beta #2.
