JAWS®
for Windows 4.01:
Released and Shipping with Support for Windows XP and a List of Other
New Features.
_____________________________
(St.
Petersburg, FL - February 1, 2002) -- Freedom Scientific, a leader in
assistive technology products for people with sensory impairments and
learning disabilities, has released its JAWS® for Windows Version
4.01. Highlighting this feature-rich version of the world's most popular
screen reading software is that it works with the new Windows XP operating
system. JAWS 4.01 includes a number of other significant features that
boost its functionality, including full support for display color depths
up to 32-bit for the Windows NT and Windows 2000 Professional operating
systems.
Web surfers will be able to find information faster and easier. JAWS 4.01
will view HTML code headings to quickly navigate to the category or sub-category
in that page. This version also announces access keys assigned to HTML
elements--a welcome addition to those in the business and educational
environments.
As in the previous JAWS 4.0 introduced in September, Version 4.01 includes
state-of-the-art technology and options that provide world-class Braille
support for applications such as Word, Excel and Power Point. This new
Braille support is unmatched by any screen reader on the market.
With JAWS 4.01, INSERT+F1 Messages now appear on the screen for easy review
in both speech and Braille, a feature that is particularly useful for
both users and instructors.
For years, JAWS has
been praised for its powerful and flexible scripting language, but now,
Version 4.01 includes new tools for easier customization. One tool gives
users control to assign or modify prompts for both speech and Braille.
And, a new Frame Viewer gives all users control to customize complicated
applications without writing scripts.
Sharon Spencer, Vice President, U.S. Sales and Marketing, stressed support
and compatibility efforts have always been a commitment for Freedom Scientific.
In fact, the first JAWS Public Beta compatible with the Windows XP operating
system was made available just two weeks after Microsoft's release.
"When
Microsoft begins work on a new operating system, our teams work in tandem
to assure continued accessibility for thousands of users who are blind
or vision impaired in both home or professional environments,"
Spencer said. "This commitment to screen reading accessibility
has been demonstrated through successive releases of JAWS versions that
are compatible with Windows Millennium, Windows NT, Windows 2000 Professional,
and now with Windows XP."
The retail price for
JAWS® for Windows 4.01 Professional Edition remains at $1,195. JAWS®
for Windows 4.01 Standard Edition is now $895. The $100 price increase
in the Standard Edition is the first price increase since JAWS was introduced
in 1994. It was necessitated by the significant resources Freedom had
had to commit for developing, testing and support of both historical and
ongoing version of Windows.
Current JAWS 4.0 customers can download for free the 20 Mb 4.01 update

outputs to refreshable Braille displays. This technology provides access
to a wide variety of information, education, and job related applications
to over 73,000 users worldwide. JAWS provides complete support to new
applications such as Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 5.0, Microsoft®
Office XP, Internet Explorer 6, among others.
