Tips from the Training Department at Freedom ScientificJAWS 5 Dictionary Manager and Language PronunciationNew in JAWS 5 with the Dictionary Manager is the ability to have a word or phrase pronounced in a given language. JAWS uses the Eloquence synthesizer by default, which has the ability to pronounce languages in American English, British English, Castilian Spanish, Latin American Spanish, French, French Canadian, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Finnish. We commonly use words that are derived from other languages in our everyday speech. In southern Louisiana, the word "lagniappe" is often used by people to mean "extra." For example, when you get a baker's dozen, which has an extra or thirteenth donut, that would be lagniappe. Since lagniappe is derived from a variation of the French language, you can write a dictionary rule to have it pronounced properly. Without the rule, Eloquence pronounces the word like "lenny app" with the accent on the "app" part of the word. In reality, the word is pronounced like "lan yap" with the accent on the "lan". To write a rule that pronounces it properly in Notepad, first open the Notepad application and type the word as spelled - lagniappe. Then follow these steps:
Now try listening to the word lagniappe and you should hear it pronounced correctly. This rule was defined in Notepad and should only work there. If you have a rule you want to be valid in any program, you should create the rule in the Default.jdf (JAWS Dictionary file). To do so, when Dictionary Manager first opens, press CTRL+SHIFT+D and the default file will open. Then follow the instructions above. The Training department at Freedom Scientific will try to give tips like this throughout the year in the @Freedom Scientific newsletter. We hope you enjoy using JAWS! Return to Top from Seventh Story
