Support for Freedom
Scientific's Focus Display Series and the
All New "PAC Mate Portable Braille Display"
PAC Mate 1.10 provides
robust support for the Focus 44, Focus 70 and Focus 84 refreshable Braille
displays. In addition, this firmware and software release supports the
new PAC Mate Portable Braille display from Freedom Scientific.
The PAC Mate Portable
Braille display provides easy navigation with cursor routing buttons,
Whiz Wheels®, and advance buttons. Weighing no more than two pounds,
this display quickly connects to your PAC Mate via USB and is available
in 20 cell or 40 cell models.
Dictionary Settings
The Dictionary Settings
dialog lets you control the way PAC Mate pronounces words, phrases, abbreviations,
or ANSI symbols. If PAC Mate mispronounces your name, for example, you
can change the pronunciation with the Dictionary Settings dialog. Just
go to the settings layer and press D.
Bluetooth and WiFi Compatibility
With support for a
range of Bluetooth and WiFi peripherals, PAC Mate is not only mobile,
but connected as well. Use this wireless technology to synchronize your
PAC Mate with your desktop computer or your mobile phone, surf the net,
or print without cables.
Bar Code Scanning
PAC Mate now supports Compact Flash Bar Code Scanners from Socket. Used in conjunction with Freedom Scientific's soon-to-be-released ScanTalker database program, you are now able to identify thousands of products such as health and beauty items, groceries and music CDs. Get not only the product name, but instructions, ingredients, nutritional information, or the tracks on your CDs!!
USB Mode
PAC Mate 1.10 allows
you to toggle the USB port between Client Mode for ActiveSync and Host
Mode for Freedom Scientific Braille displays.

Printing in FSEdit
Printing is now supported in FSEdit! You can now print to a network, IrDA or Bluetooth printer from within the application.

Sprite Backup Utility
PAC Mate now supports
Sprite Pocket Backup, which allows you to fully backup and restore your
file and programs - even your settings - using compact flash. For more

Bluetooth Dialer Program
PAC Mate now supports
the Sockets Bluetooth Dialer Program, which comes with the Socket Bluetooth
CF card. This program allows you to dial your Bluetooth phone directly
from your Contacts list. For more information, refer to Bluetooth Dialer

- Improved keyboard
responsiveness to support faster typing.
- The Task Tray is
now accessible with the commands F4 CHORD for the BNS and INSERT+F11
for the TNS. The Task Tray in Pocket PC is similar to the System Tray
in Windows.
- In FSEdit, you
can now determine whether text is left, right, centered or justified.
The Font Information command for the BNS is I CHORD, F and for
the TNS it is INSERT+F.
- The default line
length in FSEdit has been lengthened so that JAWS for Pocket PC now
reads more text in a line.
- The Find dialog
in FSEdit has been improved. Now, the Find Next button is the dialog's
default button so you just need to press the ENTER key. In addition,
the text that you were searching for is now selected in your document.
- The command for
reading selected text now works properly. On the BNS use DOTS 4+5+6+7+8
CHORD and on the TNS the command is INSERT+SHIFT+A.
- Files saved with
a .psw extension in FSEdit are no longer truncated.
- You can now set
FSEdit to be the default text editor for documents with an .rtf, .txt,
and .psw extension. To do this, go into the Options dialog found under
the Tools menu. Then press the ENTER key on the File Operations
button. Use your SPACEBAR to select the file types you want opened
in FSEdit.
- It is now possible
to create a new FSEdit document from the New menu on the Today page.
You access the New menu with F2 on the BNS or the ALT
key on the TNS.
- A progress tone
has been added to Internet Explorer to indicate when it is busy downloading
web pages.
- Now you can disconnect
from the Internet by pressing DOTS 1-4-6 CHORD, M, DOT 3+DOWN ARROW,
DOT 8 on the BNS and by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+M, CTRL+END, ENTER
on the TNS. Disconnecting from the Internet can be done from all areas
on the PAC Mate.
- In Pocket IE, same
page links no longer default to top of page.
- In Inbox, pressing
M CHORD or CTRL+SHIFT+M skips the email message header
and reads the message body.
- Now in Inbox you
are prompted to translate a Grade 2 message if you are using the send
feature from the menus.
- Leading decimal
points are no longer ignored in FSCalc.
- Median, Max, and
Min functions now work correctly in FSCalc.
- In FSCalc, you
are now able to review the calculation history by pressing the UP
ARROW. You are also able to clear the history by press SH CHORD,
H on the BNS and ALT+S, H on the TNS.
- Shortcut help has
been added to FSCalc in the BNS. From within FSCalc, press SH CHORD,
DOTS 1-4-5-6 to access this help.
- Timing errors in
Stop Watch have been fixed. Pressing the SayLine command now speaks
the elapsed time. The end of countdown is now announced regardless of
whether another application is open.
- Now whenever you
create a note in Grade 2 Braille, a dialog appears to remind you that
the note will be saved in Grade 2 Braille.
- JAWS for Pocket
PC now speaks the Options dialog in Calendar, Contacts, and Notes.
- In
Contacts, selecting from top down and deleting multiple contacts now
works.
- When creating an
appointment in Calendar, it is now possible to select from locations
previously used.
- In Calendar, the
date selector will now read when all day appointments spanning several
days are entered.
- The Word Echo feature
in the BNS no longer echos "Space."
