Enhancements and Improvements in Earlier JAWS 10 Releases
This page describes all improvements made in previous JAWS 10 releases.
Enhancements in JAWS 10.0.1151 (May 2009)
The following is a list of items addressed between the final JAWS 10.0.1142 release and the JAWS 10.0.1151 posting.
- Resolved an issue in Internet Explorer 8 where the JAWS Scripts that control reading and navigating the address bar with INSERT+A and INSERT+A twice quickly had stopped working. These commands are very useful when you want URL information without moving your Virtual Cursor from your reading position on the Web page. These scripts continue to work correctly in Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 6.
- JAWS correctly reads and speaks the column and field titles in Access 2007 database tables. For example, when you press INSERT+TAB while focus is in an Access table cell (field), JAWS will now announce all field information such as the column name, the field contents, and any other associated tutor message. Previously, the column name information was not mentioned, or it was necessary to press ALT+TAB to leave and then return to the application in order to hear the complete field information.
- When you use the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to navigate by line in the Virtual Viewer while in Access 2007, JAWS now speaks each line. Previously, JAWS would only speak the line of text when you pressed INSERT+UP ARROW to read the current line.
- The 64-bit version of JAWS 10 now correctly tracks focus when running Microsoft Windows 7.
- When you select text using SHIFT+LEFT ARROW or SHIFT+RIGHT ARROW, such as in the File name edit field of the Open dialog box, JAWS now announces each character as it is selected. Previously, JAWS would just say the word “Selected” without announcing the character.
- When composing a new e-mail message using Outlook Express 6, JAWS will now announce the words “Edit, type in text” when you move into the message body using TAB or ALT+` or CTRL+`. Previously, JAWS would say “Edit, read only.”
- When talking in a Freedom Scientific Webinar training session, you can use the ALT+L command to lock and unlock the Talk key. This command now functions correctly with the Webinar conference software plug-in that you must install the first time you attend a training session.
- Resolved several HTML issues when using JAWS with Libera System 7 Framework™ solutions software.

Enhancements in JAWS 10.0.1142 (March 2009)
The following is a list of items addressed between the final JAWS 10.0.1139 release and the JAWS 10.0.1142 posting.
- The Yahoo Instant Messenger.jss script file has been updated and included in JAWS 10 to provide support for the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9. Make sure to download the latest Yahoo! Messenger for full compatibility with JAWS 10.
- The message history in AOL Instant Messenger and the e-mail messages in the Gmail Inbox are now visible to JAWS. Previously, the virtual buffer would appear to be blank if you tried to read message history or Inbox messages.
- When navigating through the Gmail Inbox, you can once again select and open an e-mail message by pressing ENTER when focus is on the text in the Subject column. In a previous release, it was necessary to turn off the Virtual Cursor or use the JAWS cursor to open the e-mail message.
- Resolved an issue related to certain Web pages with frames, which, when updated, created a situation where JAWS would not read the text present in the updated frame. This problem was reported for both Gmail and the Webinar software used by the Freedom Scientific Training department for the new Webinars, both free and paid, now being offered.
- The default JAWS dictionary file (default.jdf) has been updated to include the correct pronunciation of two Russian symbols.
- In the JAWS help file, the Using the JAWS Cursor topic now describes the Real Window and the Focus Window restriction options that are available for the JAWS Cursor. Previously, this topic only mentioned the Application Window, Current Window, Unrestricted, and Frame restrictions.

In addition, when you use CTRL+UP ARROW and CTRL+DOWN ARROW to jump to and read the previous or next paragraph, JAWS correctly moves to and reads the paragraphs instead of stopping on blank lines.
Microsoft Excel
- When an Excel workbook contains data on multiple worksheets, JAWS now correctly reads cell information on the current worksheet. Before, when switching back and forth between worksheets, JAWS would sometimes read data from the previous worksheet.
- If a Title Region is created in one region of a worksheet, JAWS no longer behaves sluggishly when navigating in other regions on the same worksheet.

Microsoft Notepad
- Navigation by sentence (ALT+DOWN ARROW) and paragraph (CTRL+DOWN ARROW) work correctly in Notepad.
Microsoft Outlook
- Plain text e-mail messages that you forward or respond to typically have lines of text prefixed with a greater than sign. When you read the message by previous or next paragraph (CTRL+UP ARROW or CTRL+DOWN ARROW) in Outlook 2003, JAWS now recognizes and reads any paragraph prefaced with a greater than sign.
- The screen sensitive help (INSERT+F1) for a Note (CTRL+SHIFT+N) in Outlook has been improved.

- While creating an e-mail or Calendar appointment in Outlook 2007, if you jump to and navigate through Ribbon items using TAB, JAWS navigation will now remain in the Ribbons and not accidentally return to the message or appointment text. Previously, after pressing TAB a few times, JAWS would lose its navigation focus and jump to the body text.
- When a layout table appears in an e-mail message, JAWS will now correctly read text in both speech and braille as you navigate into or out of the table using the DOWN and UP ARROW keys. Previously, JAWS would announce the text correctly, but the braille display would show the last line of the table or combine several lines into one.
- JAWS now announces the recurrence and reminder flags when pressing TAB to move through Outlook 2003 appointments.
- JAWS no longer announces an unknown function call when editing or reading an e-mail message.
- When using Word as the editor in Outlook 2003, the braille contents of the To field no longer automatically appear in the CC and BCC fields in the message header.

- In the Word 2007 Modify Styles dialog box, JAWS did not speak the read-only text that described Style Properties. Now, when you use the ARROW Keys to move through and read multiple lines, JAWS will read the text.
- When you press ALT+1 twice quickly, JAWS now reads the header field of an e-mail message instead of sending the message.
- The text on a braille display now remains when navigating by character on a link in an e-mail message.
Microsoft PowerPoint
- When e-mailing a presentation from within PowerPoint 2007, JAWS correctly announces the header edit fields, such as To, CC, and Subject, as you press TAB to move through the fields.

- The INSERT+F1 help messages have been updated to include information about all slide layout types.
- The INSERT+1 keyboard help for the SPACEBAR and BACKSPACE keys in PowerPoint is now correct.
- The Custom Labels option is not available in PowerPoint and no longer appears in the Adjust JAWS Options dialog box for PowerPoint.
Microsoft Word
- When enabled, Navigation Quick Keys let you quickly and easily move through a Word document. For example, you can press H to jump to the next heading in a Word document, P to jump to the next paragraph, and G to jump to the next graphic. JAWS 10 will now automatically turn off Navigation Quick Keys when you open a Ribbon, menu, or dialog box in Word. In previous JAWS releases, Navigation Quick Keys would remain on until toggled off using INSERT+Z, or turned off using the Navigation Quick Keys option after pressing INSERT+V.
- When you move by word through the edit fields of a form using CTRL+RIGHT ARROW or CTRL+LEFT ARROW, JAWS correctly announces the entire word instead of the first character of the word.

- When you select a text box in Word, the cursor now appears in the top left corner and is ready to read.

- JAWS now speaks the correct message when using the Find Next (CTRL+PAGE DOWN) and Find Prior commands (CTRL+PAGE UP) for bookmarks and objects.
- When moving by line using the UP or DOWN ARROW in a Word form, JAWS no longer announces form fields twice.

JAWS 10.0.512 (November 2008)
The following is a list of items addressed between the final JAWS 10 public beta release and the final JAWS 10.0.512 posting. All enhancements since the initial public beta release are included in this release.
JAWS
- During the JAWS 10 public beta, it was discovered that if you selected a software update and several DAISY books to download and install at once using the Check for Updates utility, it was still necessary to download the DAISY books again after you rebooted and restarted your computer and JAWS. This issue has been resolved in JAWS 10.0.512. This means that in the future, when you select multiple items to download, all selected items will be installed with only one computer reboot necessary. Note that if you are using a beta version of JAWS 10 or an earlier JAWS release, you must first update to JAWS 10.0.512 to take advantage of this functionality.
- In an earlier JAWS 10 public beta release, there were reports of no speech on the controller computer during subsequent JAWS Tandem sessions. This issue has been resolved.
- Now, when you add a word to the Add Dictionary Definition dialog box in the Dictionary Manager, and DECTalk Access 32 is an available synthesizer for your JAWS configuration, DECTalk Access 32 appears in the Synthesizers combo box. Previously when adding a word to the Dictionary Manager, the synthesizer did not appear in the list.
Eudora E-Mail
- Links in Eudora e-mail messages now open correctly when you press the ENTER key while in Microsoft Viewer.
Microsoft Outlook
- When selecting words in an Outlook Express or Windows Mail message by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+RIGHT ARROW, JAWS now only announces the selected word. Previously, JAWS would announce all selected words with each additional keystroke.
Microsoft Word
- When pressing TAB or SHIFT+TAB to move through a Word 2007 tabular form, JAWS no longer announces heading level information as you move into edit fields.
- JAWS no longer announces an unknown function call message twice when pressing TAB or SHIFT+TAB to move through a table that contains form edit fields.
Yahoo! Messenger
- Yahoo! Messenger scripts were modified for use with Yahoo! Messenger versions 7, 8, and 9.

JAWS 10 Development Cycle
The following items were resolved during the JAWS 10 development cycle and public beta releases.
JAWS
- Improvements have been made to the responsiveness of JAWS when using it with Citrix, Terminal Services, and Remote Desktop.
AOL Instant Messenger
- Pressing ESC now closes the AIM® message window during an IM conversation. Previously, the window would not close and JAWS would announce Virtual Cursor.
FSReader
- When specific text that you are searching for in a DAISY book is found, JAWS now reads the entire line of text by performing a Say Line command.
- Braille now tracks correctly with the audio narration when reading a DAISY book with FSReader.
JAVA
- Fixed a reported issue where JAWS would stop reading controls correctly while tabbing around in the Java application after running for a short period of time in the application.
Lotus Notes
- After opening an e-mail message with Lotus Notes 6.5.4, if you happen to toggle the ALT key by accident, you no longer lose access to the Virtual Buffer. In a previous release, you would have to press ALT+TAB to restore the Virtual Buffer.
Microsoft Access
- When using the ARROW keys to move through the Folder view of the Open dialog box, JAWS no longer repeats "Folder view, list view" for each item in the list box. Folder view, list view is only announced once when focus enters the list box.
- When using the TAB key to move through an Access 2007 database, JAWS correctly announces button labels instead of just saying button.
- While running JAWS with Microsoft Access 2007, Access no longer freezes when you try to create a new table in Design View.
- After typing text into a database, it can now be read using the Say Line command, INSERT+UP ARROW.
- Pressing INSERT+H for Access 2007 hot key help now shows all JAWS hot keys that are applicable to Access 2007.
- When you use the BACKSPACE key to delete text in Design View, JAWS now announces the deleted character instead of saying blank.
- When you use the LEFT or RIGHT ARROW keys to edit text in any cell containing data, JAWS now announces characters as you navigate through the characters.
Microsoft Excel
- In Microsoft Excel®, JAWS no longer looses speech after you use the AutoFit Selection option to adjust a spreadsheet's column width. Previously, you had to press ALT+TAB to move away from and return to the spreadsheet.
- JAWS correctly announces the selected font and style options in the Font dialog box.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
- An issue reported during the public beta has been resolved where JAWS would hang when loading specific pages from the Dell Web site. This problem was introduced earlier in a JAWS 10 beta release.
- JAWS no longer suddenly exits Auto Forms Mode when you move from one combo box to another on a Web page.
- When using the Links List dialog box on the Elance Web site, Internet Explorer no longer crashes when the link labeled Next is selected.
- As a result of many requests from public and private beta testers, we have added the ability to set Auto Forms Mode on or off based on the Web page. This choice is now found in the Personalized Settings dialog box accessed with command INSERT+SHIFT+V. This lets customers take advantage of this great new feature on most pages they browse, but also turns it off if they have sites where they would rather remain in control of Forms Mode manually.
- Auto Forms Mode now works correctly when moving from one field to the next on the Web page myt-mobile.com.
- Now when navigating tables on a Web page, JAWS will announce when you are in a table and using table navigation commands to move about the table.
- When you open an iGoogle™ Web page, JAWS now places focus directly into the Search edit field.
- JAWS now provides feedback when using the Navigation Quick Key F to move to the next form field on a Web page. Previously, it was necessary to press INSERT+ESC before JAWS recognized the Navigation Quick Key.
Microsoft Outlook
- The responsiveness of JAWS has been improved when using Outlook.
- In Outlook, Outlook Express, and Windows Mail, when a message opens, JAWS will announce links and frames, when this option is turned on, after all header fields are spoken as expected. Previously, when a message opened using JAWS 10, you would hear the number of links and frames spoken after the From field is announced, but before the message's Subject field.
- If you turn off the option Message Header Field with Message Announcement in Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2003, an e-mail's message header is not announced when you perform a Say All. This is how it works in Outlook Express.
- When you create an appointment that spans multiple time slots in Outlook Calendar, JAWS now correctly reads and announces the appointment as you navigate into and out of the appointment time-slots.
- JAWS successfully opens any link that appears in the List Links dialog box when in an Outlook e-mail message.
- When replying to an e-mail message in Outlook Express, you can now type in the message body edit field without having to close and restart your reply.
- Pressing ESC when you are composing an e-mail message with Outlook Express will now let you close the message. Previously, JAWS would announce Virtual PC, and the message would remain open.
- Braille and speech are now synchronized when navigating items in the Outlook Address Book. Previously, the braille display would sometimes move ahead and speech would fall behind when reading the contents of the Address Book.
- The Outlook auto complete feature works correctly when you add e-mail address to the CC: edit field. Previously, when you used the UP or DOWN ARROW keys to scroll through the e-mail address list, JAWS would announce the current address in the list and then repeat all e-mail address in the CC: edit field. JAWS now only announces the address that has focus in the address list.
- If multiple e-mail addresses appear in the To: edit field, JAWS now announces each e-mail address instead of saying blank as you use INSERT+LEFT ARROW or INSERT+RIGHT ARROW to move from one address to the next.
- JAWS now announces characters that are typed into the subject field of the Meeting Request dialog box instead of saying blank.
- When you change the way e-mail messages are viewed and arranged in Outlook, JAWS no longer loses focus in the Outlook window.
- When an all day event is created using Outlook Calendar, JAWS will now announce all meeting information such as subject, location, start date, and end date.
- When you open the context menu, by pressing the Applications key, in the message body of a new message window, you can now select an item from the menu without losing focus.
- JAWS will announce if an e-mail message has an attachment in Outlook 2007
Microsoft PowerPoint
- Now when you press the UP and DOWN ARROW keys while focus is in the slide area view of PowerPoint, JAWS now reads slide numbers and titles.
Microsoft Word
- If your Word document contains style changes, for example, when moving from normal text to a heading and then back to normal text, JAWS will now announce the style changes. Previously when you had style changes turned on, JAWS would report the style change on the line before or after the changed item.
- If you change the current Word scheme so that a sound is played when you move to a heading in a Word document, JAWS will play the sound if you navigate using the Navigation Quick Key H or UP and DOWN ARROW keys. Word schemes are changed and created using the Speech and Sounds Manager in Configuration Manager. Previously, sounds did not play when using Navigation Quick Keys.
- With the release of JAWS 10, we added the ability to announce how many objects are contained in a Microsoft Word document when it opens. In public beta 2, we have addressed a reported problem where JAWS would appear to hang when opening documents containing a large number of objects. The example we were provided with was the Sound Forge manual which is 300 pages with over 1397 objects. This has now been resolved. JAWS still tells you the number objects, the document successfully loads, and it still has the same responsiveness as it did in JAWS 9.
- JAWS now correctly announces the column and row position, along with the words uniform table, when you enter a Word table. Previously, JAWS would announce "uniform table, blank" and not include column and row position.
- When you press F11 or SHIFT+F11 to move to the next or prior field in a Word document, the insertion point is now at the beginning of the field.
- Now when using Word 2007, the braille display cursor and the on screen cursor track in the same location of the document.
- When a Word document contains forms, the INSERT+CTRL+HOME keystroke moves focus to the first form field and now announces that focus is in the field.
- If a Word 2007 document appears to be stuck on a Ribbon control, such as when you activate Track Changes, focus returns to the document and is no longer stuck on a Ribbon. This way, when you insert a comment or revision into the document, you are back in the document as you would expect. Previously, you were forced to press ALT+TAB several times to regain focus in the document's text window.
- When the Indicate Tables check box that appears in Text Processing options of Configuration Manager is selected or cleared, JAWS now honors that choice for detecting tables in a Word document.
- Previously in Word 2007, the INSERT+UP ARROW and INSERT+NUM PAD 5 keystrokes would not announce highlighted items in the Ribbon bar. This issue has been resolved.
Mozilla Firefox
- The SHIFT+PERIOD and SHIFT+COMMA keystrokes now correctly move focus to the end of a current list, table, or element and to the beginning of a list, table, or element when using Firefox.
- When Firefox 3 is set as your default Web browser, and you select links in the Web Resources submenu of the JAWS application window, these links now open using the Firefox browser. Earlier, Internet Explorer would open as the default browser despite your Firefox settings.
- JAWS no longer suddenly exits Auto Forms Mode when you move from one combo box to another on a Web page.
- JAWS correctly announces Firefox hot keys while moving between different controls and fields in the Options dialog box.
- JAWS announces and identifies bullet lists with both speech and braille when reading Web pages with Firefox.
- Improvements have been made to the way JAWS announces when the ARIA Live Region of a Web page updates while you are running Firefox 3. Previously, JAWS would get stuck on some pages.
- If Firefox is the first application to be launched which uses the virtual cursor, the virtual cursor now works when using subsequent applications, such as Outlook, and reading documents or e-mail messages.
- JAWS may not report the same number of links as Internet Explorer, but it does correctly provide all the links on a Web page when running Firefox.
- JAWS no longer announces question marks when you type non-Latin characters into a Web page's edit fields.
- JAWS now speaks the correct alert message in Firefox and no longer lags behind by one message.
- JAWS can now activate buttons that submit complicated forms, for example, www.mapquest.com.
- JAWS can now easily activate clickable items on Web pages using Firefox, for example, www.minorleaguebaseball.com.
- Multi-line edits now are now easily read by JAWS, and JAWS also announces “contains text” when you move to any of these fields and the field contains text.
Windows Vista
- When using Windows Vista, JAWS will now announce the state of check boxes when you select or clear programs and features in the Programs and Features dialog box. This is located in the Windows Vista Control Panel.
