Question
Answer
The first release of ZoomText 11 and JAWS 18 introduced the first wave of interoperability
improvements to provide a seamless experience when installing, starting and
using ZoomText and JAWS together. When running ZoomText and JAWS together you
will enjoy widespread improvements in ZoomText's visual highlighting and tracking
of the focus point that JAWS is speaking, even when using the JAWS Say All command
and when navigating with the virtual cursor.
And with the release of ZoomText Fusion 11 in May 2017, there is even greater integration of ZoomText and JAWS, including one single installation procedure.
Using ZoomText Hotkeys with JAWS Laptop Layout
ZoomText 11 and JAWS 18 both offer keyboard command systems that include hotkeys
and layered keys. All of the ZoomText 11 hotkeys utilize the Caps Lock key as
the primary modifier. When using JAWS 18 with laptop keyboard layout, many of
the JAWS commands also utilize the Caps Lock key as the primary modifier. To
eliminate hotkey conflicts when using ZoomText with JAWS configured for the
laptop keyboard layout you will need to make a few adjustments in ZoomText and
JAWS. Once these adjustments are made you will simply add the ALT key
into each of the ZoomText hotkeys that you use. For example, where the factory
hotkeys for zooming in and out are CAPSLOCK+UP ARROW and CAPSLOCK+DOWN
ARROW, you will now press CAPSLOCK+ALT+UP ARROW and CAPSLOCK+ALT+DOWN
ARROW. In addition, to toggle the Caps Lock state (for typing capital letters),
you will need to triple-tap the Caps Lock key.
To prepare ZoomText for laptop layout compatibility with JAWS
First, import the ZoomText hotkeys for JAWS laptop layout into your active ZoomText configuration as follows:
- On the ZoomText toolbar, choose ZoomText > Command Keys. The ZoomText Command Keys dialog box will open.
- In the ZoomText Command Keys dialog box, choose the Import Hotkeys button. The Import Hotkeys dialog box will open and display a list of ZoomText hotkey configuration files.
- In the list of files, choose the "ZT_11_JAWS_laptop" file that includes the language ID for your language. For example, the ZT_11_JAWS_laptop_en-US.zxc file is for US English, while the ZT_11_JAWS_laptop_en-GB.zxc file is for UK English.
- Click the OK button to return to the ZoomText Command Keys dialog box.
- Choose the OK button to close the ZoomText Command Keys dialog box.
Then, save your active ZoomText configuration as follows:
- On the ZoomText toolbar, choose ZoomText > Configurations. The Configurations menu will open.
- If you want to save the modified configuration as default configuration (recommended), choose Save Default Configuration.
- If you want to save the modified configuration as a custom configuration, choose Save Custom Configuration. The Save Configuration dialog box will open. Choose an existing configuration file to save to or type the name for a new configuration file, then choose the Save button.
To select the JAWS Laptop keyboard layout
- Open the JAWS UI (INSERT+J)
- Open Options>Basic Settings
- Navigate to "Use Keyboard Layout"
- Select "Laptop" (the other choices are "Desktop" and "kinesis")
