MAGic 12 is Released, Competitive Upgrade Available

We're proud to announce that version 12 of our MAGic® screen magnification software is now available. This breakthrough release sets a new standard in screen magnification.

"This MAGic release has a simple, attractive user interface delivering the enhancements most requested by our users," says Dusty Voorhees, Senior Product Manager at Freedom Scientific.

"The new HD Text feature smooths the letters, no matter which font or magnification level you choose - no more looking at blocky, pixilated text as you increase magnification. The new HD mouse offers selectable styles and continuous mouse pointer sizing that remains sharp at all magnification levels. This new look and feel provides intuitive access to any feature while being easy on the eyes, so users enjoy longer computing sessions with more comfort and less fatigue."

This release is replete with unique new features that enhance productivity for low vision users:

Take full control of what MAGic says and when it says it with Speech On Demand™. Using speech can reduce eye fatigue and improve efficiency, but sometimes too much speech can be overwhelming. MAGic 12 goes far beyond a simple on/off toggle for speech, allowing you to eliminate extra chatter. No other screen magnification product provides this level of control over the speech you hear.

All new mouse, cursor, and color schemes make it easier for low vision users to work in today's modern applications. Enhancements offer high-contrast, low-glare screens and a customizable, easy-to-track mouse and cursor.

Application-specific voice profiles make it very easy to select, create, change, and save default voice settings

Research It gives you quick and easy access to a wide range of information available on the Internet, and it's available at the touch of a button if you're using the MAGic Large Print Keyboard

Navigation Quick Keys make surfing the Web and working with PDF files more efficient. Get to where you want to be with just a key press.

The Skim Reading tool gets you quickly to just the information you want

For a downloadable demonstration copy of MAGic 12, or to find out how to upgrade, visit the MAGic What's New page.

JAWS 14 is Now Released

Thanks to everyone who participated in our public beta cycle for version 14 of our JAWS® screen reading software. This is our best JAWS release yet, offering features not available in any other screen reader.

This release includes a new feature called Flexible Web, designed to give users better control when reading Web pages. This innovation allows screen reader users to identify and block extraneous content, such as advertisements and social media links that sighted people skip right past, but that are serious hindrances to navigation and continuous reading for blind users. Available for use with Internet Explorer or Firefox, Flexible Web includes a wizard that makes it easy to create global rules or Web page specific rules.

JAWS 14 is also the first screen reader offering support for the Windows 8 Operating System. The new Windows 8 Start Screen and Windows Store Apps such as Internet Explorer, E-mail, Calendar, and Contacts, are all supported. Freedom Scientific worked with Microsoft on the new Accessibility Driver, to provide JAWS cursor and Braille support on this new operating system.

"This release offers some significant breakthroughs in accessibility for screen reader users," said Eric Damery, Vice President of Software Product Management for Freedom Scientific. "Flexible Web is one of the biggest advances in Web access for screen reader users since the introduction of Navigation Quick Keys and the Links List. Other significant benefits include the new Vocalizer Voices, provided for free, and a new feature that allows Outlook 2010 and 2007 e-mails, formatted using tables, to be read without having to first open them in a browser. These advances, along with all the other JAWS features and enhancements, make this new version of JAWS a ‘must have' to go along with our all new MAGic 12 release."

The JAWS 14 upgrade is an SMA release and can be downloaded as either a 32- or 64-bit version from the JAWS downloads page. DVD shipments to SMA holders and new product customers will commence on Nov 1, 2012.

JAWS 13.0.638 December Update is Released

The December update for JAWS has been released. Use Check for Updates within the JAWS Help menu to download it or visit the JAWS Downloads Web page to find download links.

JAWS 13 was released in October 2011, including Convenient OCR, a feature that performs Optical Character Recognition on text that is displayed as an image, thereby enabling blind computer users to read items that were previously inaccessible. Examples of such screens include a PDF file, the setup screen of an application, or the menu of selections on a DVD. JAWS now provides an opportunity to read and interact with these screens, including locating and clicking on text which may be required to activate a control.

JAWS 13 also includes Results Viewer, a new HTML interface that displays the results of features like Research It. The new interface enables faster navigation with Navigation Quick Keys and switching to other windows without losing the results of your lookup. Sports scores have returned to Research It and are easier to navigate than ever before. The INSERT+V keystroke now opens the new Quick Settings, which replaces Adjust JAWS Options and matches the easy-to-use Settings Center style interface introduced last year in JAWS 12.

"This release represents a huge step in accessibility for screen reader users," says Eric Damery, Vice President of Software Product Management for Freedom Scientific. "Whether trying to identify and read inaccessible PDF documents that are just scanned images or interacting with graphical controls that could not previously be located, the new Convenient OCR option built into JAWS 13 has been described as a real game changer. JAWS 13 is also packed with other features and enhancements that have been selected and designed to improve access and ease of use for all users."

JAWS 12 is Released

JAWS 12.0.512 has been released. Full product and SMA shipments will commence the first week of November. JAWS licenses sold since September 1st, will automatically be updated to version 12 authorization. Anyone authorized for JAWS 12 may download and begin using JAWS 12 right away. Even if you are not authorized for JAWS 12, feel free to download and install it. It will run in 40-minute mode so you can try the new features.

To read the full text of the new JAWS 12 features and enhancements, visit the What's New in JAWS 12 page. A condensed version of some of the new features and enhancements in JAWS 12 include:

JAWS 12 New Features

JAWS BrailleIn™ - The JAWS BrailleIn feature allows you to use only your Perkins-style braille keyboard to control your computer using both Windows and application specific commands. In addition, you can also enter both contracted and uncontracted braille input from your braille display’s keyboard.

Settings Center - JAWS Settings Center is a new feature that allows you to quickly configure and globally apply JAWS settings, or configure and apply settings for a specific application. It consolidates all options into one convenient dialog box. It includes a Search edit box, which provides an extremely fast way to find and edit JAWS functionality.

Virtual Ribbon Menu - The new Virtual Ribbon Menu provides predictable navigation, lets you see everything in the Ribbon, and offers consistency when navigating with ARROW keys and first letter navigation of the menus in programs that have the Ribbon interface.

Marking and Returning to a Place in Word - Using the new PlaceMarker feature in Word, you can now mark a location without affecting the document. It allows you to easily return to the PlaceMarker any time, even after closing Word or rebooting your computer. Press CTRL+WINDOWS Key+K to set or move the marker. Only one PlaceMarker can be set per document. Press WINDOWS Key+K to return to the marked location. This feature also makes it easy to select large blocks of text. Just mark a starting point in the document, read and navigate until you reach the end of the text that you want to select, and then press INSERT+SPACEBAR, M. This acts the same way as clicking and dragging a mouse over text. Once selected, feel free to copy, cut, or paste the text anywhere you like.

Text Analyzer - The new Text Analyzer feature is a tool that notifies you of errors in your document, such as unmatched parentheses, unintentional format changes, extra whitespace, and stray or unspaced punctuation by using a spoken message or WAV file.

Automatic Notification of Updates - When JAWS starts, it can now alert you if a software update is available. You then have the option to install it now or later. This is known as Automatic Notification of Updates and is on by default.

Say All Schemes - Continuous reading of a Web page or Word document with numerous links can be frustrating due to constant interruptions that identify links and headings on the page. An example of this is when you read a Wikipedia article using the Say All command, where many words in the article are links to other articles. The Say All Scheme feature can alleviate this annoyance by using an unobtrusive sound or no link and heading indication at all to provide a smooth reading experience when using the Say All command.

Reverse Panning Buttons for Braille - Reverse Panning Buttons is a new feature that allows you to switch the direction of left and right panning buttons. This is a great benefit if you are a two-handed braille user who reads different parts of a braille line at the same time.

Hotkey Component for Structured Braille Support - When using Structured Mode, you can configure the amount of information and the order in which the information appears on the braille display when navigating the controls in a dialog box, an Office Ribbon, or a spreadsheet.

JAWS Support for ARIA - ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) is assistive technology markup used by Web content creators to make Web pages more accessible for screen readers. This is done by adding specific ARIA tags and elements to HTML code. Visit the Freedom Scientific
Screen Reading Software Documentation Web page, and read the JAWS Support for ARIA document to learn more about JAWS and ARIA markup.

Reading HTML Tables - The default setting for reading HTML table titles has changed so that JAWS now conforms to industry defined HTML standards by only reading table headers that are properly marked up. You can see this when using the CTRL+ALT+ARROW Keys to move through an HTML table. While the default setting is now set to Only Marked Headers, you can continue to use earlier functionality for reading HTML tables if you are more comfortable with those settings.

NCAA Football Lookup Source in Research It - NCAA Football is a new addition to Research It. Use it to search for the schedules or results of your favorite college football teams.

Update to MLB, NBA, NFL, and NHL Lookup Sources - The MLB Scores, NBA Scores, NFL Scores, and NHL Scores lookup sources in Research It have been expanded and now provide links to box scores and game summaries. Each game listed in the Virtual Viewer is now a link. Select any link to launch your Web browser and read a recap and statistics of past games, or a preview of future games. In addition, the MLB Scores lookup source has been revised to list all baseball games together instead of grouping separately into American and National leagues.

Improvements with Adobe Flash - JAWS can now announce buttons and other items that did not work correctly on some Flash Web sites. Examples of Web sites that now function properly are Audible.com and Dominos.ca.

Improvements with My Computer in Windows 7 - When using My Computer in Windows 7, JAWS not only announces the drive letter and volume label, but now also includes both used and free space on the drive, as well as the percentage of free space. While this information is readily available to sighted users, JAWS now makes it accessible to all users. To open My Computer, press WINDOWS Key+E.

Keyboard Lock - The Keyboard Lock feature is useful when you want to prevent accidental keyboard action. A typical example for locking the keyboard would be when you are transferring files across a network or when a download is in progress.

Enhancements in JAWS 12

For a complete list of enhancements made in this release, see the JAWS 12 enhancements page.

The following is a list of items addressed or added between the final JAWS 11.0.1447 release and the JAWS 11.0.1461 posting. All enhancements since the initial public beta release are included in this release.

JAWS

Resolved an issue where letters were lost when using Typing Mode with a Focus braille display.

Resolved a customer reported issue where JAWS was announcing large negative values in combo boxes.

JAWS no longer duplicates information that is typed into form edit fields.

Resolved issues and improved performance with the Convert Currency and MLB Scores lookup sources in Research It.

Word and Outlook

Addressed an issue reported by The Lighthouse of Houston related to the spell checker not working as expected when using a third party add-in with Word.

When in a table in a Word document, the INSERT+TAB keystroke correctly announces the cell content along with column and row title.

The default setting for graphics detection in all versions of Word and Outlook 2007 or later is set to Labeled by default. This means that JAWS announces alt text (if available) and image dimensions.

Resolved an issue where tutor messages were spoken before relevant information when using the ARROW Keys to read the next line or previous line in an Outlook 2010 e-mail message. This fix also resolves an issue where tutor messages were spoken with each press of an ARROW Key when moving through a message folder.

JAWS no longer announces an unknown function call error when Outlook 2003 is configured to request a user name and password before launching.

Lotus Notes

Resolved two issues with Lotus Notes®. JAWS now announces labels for the date and time fields in a calendar entry. Also, the ALT+DOWN ARROW keystroke now opens the combo box for date and time fields.

Resolved an issue with Lotus® Sametime® software where JAWS was not reading chat history when using the ARROW Keys.

The Lotus Notes topic in the JAWS help file has been updated to include the latest application functionality and keystrokes.

Check for Updates

Use Check for Updates in the JAWS Help menu for JAWS to get the latest versions of JAWS software as well as updated DAISY books when they are available. Go to the Help menu in JAWS and choose Check for Updates.

Check for Updates is Updated

The JAWS Check for Updates feature has also been improved to give you downloads that are smaller and quicker to install. You should notice significantly smaller download sizes if you use Check for Updates and keep your JAWS version updated often.

Resolved an issue in Windows Live Mail where the entire Menu bar was announced when you created a new message, then moved to the body of the message, and then returned to the Menu bar.

Resolved an issue where JAWS did not announce the number of unread messages for any folder when navigating through the folder's tree view.

Resolved an issue when inserting a signature into a new Windows Live e-mail message. The problem appeared after you inserted a signature and then tried to navigate through the message body using ARROW Keys. This resulted in Forms Mode sounds being heard, and focus remaining in the signature text.

Resolved an issue where strange text was announced by JAWS when pressing UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW in a blank To, CC, BCC, or Subject edit field.

Resolved an issue where JAWS would not read the header and content of the next message after you deleted an opened e-mail message.

Resolved an issue where JAWS would not correctly announce the header or content of e-mail messages when using CTRL+PERIOD or CTRL+COMMA to move to the next or previous message.

JAWS 11.0.1430 Update Posted on April 15, 2010

The following is a list of items addressed or added between the JAWS 11.0.756 Update posted on December 17, 2009 and the JAWS 11.0.1430 posting.

New Features Available in this Release

These new features are available in the latest JAWS 11 release. For more information, listen to the March 2010 FSCast.

Office 2010

JAWS 11.0.1430 now includes support for Microsoft Office 2010, which is scheduled for release in early 3rd quarter of this year.

New Research It User Interface

Research It has been simplified and consolidated into a single dialog box for easier access to all search functionality. The edit control now includes the history of prior lookups. Also, a help window provides a detailed description of each item in the lookup source list. Finally, an Options button provides an easy solution for users to customize the list of lookups that will show up each time these use this great new feature.

Lookup Sources Added to Research It

The following lookup sources have been added to JAWS: BBC Top News Stories, CNN Headline News, Flight Info Lookup, NBA Scores, NHL Scores, and Technology News from CNET. Note that the People Search lookup source has been improved to increase its reliability.

AOL Instant Messenger 7.2 Script Updates

JAWS supports the recent release of AOL Instant messenger, providing an accessible interface to Facebook Chat. For a description of how to chat in real time with your Facebook contacts, see the March 2010 FSCast.

AIM 7.2 scripts have been updated to include the following:

Item counting works while the user types in the Filter Buddy List box, not just when the user types in the Buddy List itself.

Boxely menus work with braille.

The new scripts and installer work with 64-bit versions of Windows.

Instant messages that are put into grouping objects read correctly with ALT+ARROWS and ALT+NUMBERS.

The ability to use AIM to access the Facebook Chat interface has been added.

Mute Speech

JAWS speech can be toggled on and off using the layered keystroke INSERT+SPACEBAR, S. When using this keystroke, you must first press and release INSERT+SPACEBAR, and then press S to toggle speech.

Word Track Changes and Braille Support

JAWS 11 now makes it easier to identify Track Change revisions such as insertions and deletions in Word documents when reading with a refreshable braille display. When you navigate into revised text of any kind, the Braille Cursor changes to a blinking DOT 8, and the status cells show the revision type.

When Track Changes is turned on, and the PC Cursor is within revised text, the letters I and R appear in the third and fourth status cells to show inserted text. The letters D and R appear in the third and fourth status cells to show deleted text. An R in the fourth status cell represents other revisions, such as style or attribute changes, in the revised text. Pressing the Cursor Routing button above the fourth status cell displays the revision type, author, and date.

To properly display deleted text, you must set the Document Presentation option (using INSERT+V) to Screen Layout. In addition, set Word to use Draft View (Normal View in Word 2003), and choose Final Showing Markup or Original Showing Markup to display changes.

Word's revision tracking feature with braille support works for any refreshable braille display that supports Flash messages. See the Track Changes in Word help topic in the JAWS help file for more information.

Braille Cursor Operation

In JAWS 8 and earlier, JAWS exclusively used a technology that looked at the computer screen and captured items such as text, graphics, controls, and other elements. This made it easy for someone with a braille display to move around and understand the screen layout. Although this worked well with speech, it was sometimes difficult to see specific attributes within a Word document when using braille. Beginning with JAWS 9, new technology was introduced that improved access to Word documents. From an active cursor and speech perspective, JAWS provided lots of rich and accurate detail contained in the document. From a braille perspective, you could not pan away from the current line without the active cursor following the Braille Cursor. This made it hard to return to where you were initially reading or editing in the document. It was also difficult to review the document beyond what was visible on the screen.

This release of JAWS now combines the best of both technologies for a braille user. You can use the keys on your refreshable braille display to move around the entire screen without moving the active cursor. This means that you can easily browse a Word document with the Braille Cursor, reviewing text and information before and after the current focus line, and then immediately return to the active cursor by pressing LEFT ARROW, RIGHT ARROW, or any other key on the computer keyboard. For more information, see the Braille Options Dialog topic in the JAWS help file.

Braille Output Improvements with Windows 7

In Windows 7, braille output has been significantly improved in the Start menu and Windows Explorer.

Excel CellMarkers

A CellMarker is a bookmark in an Excel worksheet. This feature makes it easy to jump from the current cell to one that you bookmarked in the same or different worksheet. You can have one CellMarker per worksheet. The following keystrokes are available:

Press INSERT+WINDOWS Key+K to add a CellMarker.

Press WINDOWS Key+K to move to the CellMarker in the current worksheet.

Press CTRL+WINDOWS Key+K to move to a CellMarker on the next worksheet.

Press CTRL+WINDOWS Key+SHIFT+K to move to a CellMarker on the previous worksheet.

Press CTRL+ALT+WINDOWS Key+K to view a list of CellMarkers.

Excel Options

The following Excel options (INSERT+V) have been added:

Filtered Columns and Rows Detection: This option controls whether to detect filtered columns and rows as you navigate cells in a worksheet. The default setting is off.
If the option is on, and the worksheet has filtered columns or rows, JAWS announces the type of filter in use and which columns and rows are filtered. If you navigate within the same column or row, JAWS does not repeat this information. JAWS will also announce if filtered columns and rows are nonconsecutive. The INSERT+F1 Screen-Sensitive Help message also states which columns and rows are filtered.

Hyperlink Address Announcement: This option determines how much detail is announced for links that point to other cells within an Excel document. The default setting is off.
If a cell contains a link to another cell in a worksheet, JAWS announces the worksheet name and the cell reference when this option is on. If the link points to a Web site or e-mail external to the Excel document, JAWS only states that the cell contains a link.

Focus Loss Announcement: Use this option to control if JAWS announces a loss of focus. This can happen frequently in some versions of Windows; however, it may become too verbose. When you change this setting, it is stored between JAWS sessions. The default setting is off.

Tandem Connect Sounds: This option determines if you hear WAV file sounds played when a JAWS Tandem session connects, suspends, resumes, or disconnects while running Excel. The default setting is on.

Stop Words Exception Dictionary: This option controls whether or not a stop words dictionary is used by the Word Index (INSERT+CTRL+W) feature. A stop words dictionary is a list of words that will be ignored by the search. These are common, recurring words; examples include words such as and, of, the. The default is on.

Select Region and Announce Range Keystroke in Excel

Use the CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR keystroke to select a region in a spreadsheet and then announce the region's cell range. This is similar to CTRL+SHIFT+8.

SAPI 5 Synthesizer with 64-bit JAWS

Sixty-four bit versions of JAWS 11 can use 32-bit SAPI 5 synthesizer and voices when running 64-bit Windows operating systems.

Graphics Detection in Word and Outlook

Graphics detection has changed in the Adjust JAWS Options dialog box for both Word and Outlook. The Picture and Graphical Objects Detection option, formerly located in the Reading Options branch of the tree view, has been removed. To detect graphics in Word documents or Outlook messages, press INSERT+V use the Graphics option in the General Options branch.

New Scripting Capabilities

The JAWS script language now supports arrays and collections, along with For and ForEach loops for iterating through these new data types. For technical details, see the Variables chapter in the Basics of Scripting manual. It can be downloaded from the Freedom Scientific Web site.

Check for Updates

Use Check for Updates in the JAWS Help menu for JAWS to get the latest versions of JAWS software as well as updated DAISY books when they are available. Go to the Help menu in JAWS and choose Check for Updates.

JAWS 11.0.756 Update

JAWS 11.0.756 Update posted on December 17, 2009

The following is a list of items addressed or added between the final JAWS 11.0.746 release and the JAWS 11.0.756 posting. All enhancements since the initial public beta release are included in this release.

Resolved an issue in Windows 7 where properly authorized JAWS licenses were being asked to reactivate after rebooting.

Improvements have been made to the way JAWS recognizes all data tables that are tagged with the <TH> component.

Resolved an issue with FSReader 2.0 where audio content was not being played after pressing CTRL+P.

The Set Row Total and the Set Column Total functions now correctly define and report the row or column total for the selected cell in an Excel worksheet.

Resolved an issue in Excel where some settings were not correctly saved after closing the Adjust JAWS Options dialog box.

JAWS correctly identifies tables using the Navigation Quick Key T when running Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8.

Resolved an issue where JAWS would frequently shut down when running Windows Explorer in Windows 7.

When using Firefox, JAWS correctly enters Forms Mode and reads table headings.

Resolved a reported issue when using Terminal Services or Remote desktop if connecting to a computer running Windows 7.

Resolved a reported issue in Internet Explorer edit controls where text being selected was not being announced as expected.

The following lookup sources have been added to the JAWS Research It feature in this release. Remember that you can quickly access lookup sources using the INSERT+SPACEBAR, R keystroke. See previous lookup sources for a list of items added in an earlier release.

Area Code Lookup: Type a U.S. or Canadian area code into the lookup edit field and learn the city, state, or province location for that area code.

Business Search: Allows you to search for a specific or general business in your area using its name or business category and location. The location can be in the form of a zip code, city, or city and state. Search results will provide the name, address, phone number, and, when applicable, Web site link. Always use a semicolon to separate the business name or category from the location, for example, pizza; 33716. This particular search will return a list of pizza restaurants in and around the 33716 zip code. If you know the name and location of a business, such as John Doe Plumbing in St. Petersburg, Florida, you can type John Doe Plumbing; St Petersburg, FL to retrieve the address and phone number. If you would rather see results for more plumbers in your city, enter the term plumbers and then the location for a list of these businesses in your area. Note: Use a comma to separate the city and state location. Also, do not use a period when typing city name abbreviations, for example, type St Petersburg, FL, or Washington, DC.

Convert Currency: Use this lookup source to convert an amount of money from one currency into a foreign equivalent. The current day’s exchange rate is used to convert the currency values typed into the lookup edit field. Note: Three letter abbreviations are used to represent international currencies, for example, USD for U.S. dollars, GBP for British pounds, or EUR for Euros. To view a list of valid currency abbreviations, select the Convert Currency lookup without entering a monetary value. Research It will indicate that you must enter valid currency values and will then display a list of currency abbreviations for numerous countries. Run Convert Currency again, but this time use the appropriate currency abbreviations from the previous list. When typing currencies and amounts into the lookup edit field, first type the amount and currency you are converting from, and then type the currency that you are converting to. For example, to convert 100 U.S. dollars into British pounds, type 100 USD GBP using a space between each item typed. The result will appear similar to 100 U.S. dollars = 61. 2070021 British pounds.

FedEx Tracking: Returns status information for a valid FedEx® tracking number. Note: You may want to consider making this your default lookup source if your job requires you to frequently track FedEx shipments.

Note: After JAWS is updated, if you do not have 17 lookup sources listed, refer to the TSN: New Research It items are not listed after updating JAWS from an older version.

Freedom Scientific Releases JAWS® 11

Users Praise the Benefits of "Research It" Feature

(St. Petersburg, Florida, October 19, 2009) Freedom Scientific today announced the English release of JAWS version 11, the world's leading screen reader for visually impaired computer users. This new release includes features that will expand educational and employment opportunities for users at all levels. These new features include Research It, Word Index, a free software DAISY player, and enhancements specifically for Windows 7, including UI Automation support and improved ARIA support.

The new Research It feature lets users quickly access information for any application and immediately return to what they were doing. Use just a few keystrokes to look up information such as word definitions, Wikipedia results, weather conditions, news stories, or even sports scores. When you have finished reviewing the information, simply press ESCAPE to return to your current task. An Internet connection is all that is required to use Research It with JAWS 11. There is also a very comprehensive Research It Developer's Guide that shows how individuals or organizations can modify Research It to create their own lookups on the Web or even within their own network for improved on-the-job efficiency.

For more information, listen to the September FSCast, where this feature and others are demonstrated and discussed in detail.

JAWS has been updated to make it a very friendly and easy transition for our customers when they migrate to new computers with Windows 7 in the future.?

On Monday, October 19th, Eric Damery will take the Tek Talk audience on a tour of JAWS 11. For the first time, this exciting software release will be distributed on a DVD providing the user with additional helpful materials, as well as a free DAISY player; FS Reader. You won't want to miss Eric's demonstration of the new robust features included in the release of JAWS 11, as well as his discussion of several important enhancements. Here are a few examples of these powerful new features.

Research it is a new feature that provides quick access to information while also making it easy to return to your primary task. Use just a few keystrokes to look up information and display salient data in the Virtual Viewer. When you have finished researching, just press escape to return to the task you were performing before the research started.

Eric will demonstrate the new Word Index feature. This generates a list of words that frequently appear on a document or web page. The words are sorted and appear in the list based on the number of occurrences, with the highest number placed first, and the remaining words alphabetized.

Be sure to mark your calendar and save the date.

Date: Monday, October 19th, 2009

Time: 5:00 PM PDT, 6:00 PM MDT, 7:00 PM CDT, and 8:00 PM EDT and elsewhere in the world Tuesday 0:00 GMT

Enter your first and last names on the sign-in screen.
If you are a first-time user of the Talking Communities online conferencing software, there is a small, safe software program that you need to download and then run. A link to the software is available on every entry screen to the Accessible World rooms.

All online interactive programs require no password, are free of charge, and open to anyone worldwide having an Internet connection, a computer, speakers, and a sound card. Those with microphones can interact audibly with the presenters and others in the virtual audience. To speak to us, hold down the control key and let up to listen.

Enhancements in JAWS 10.0.1154 (June 2009)

The following is a list of items addressed between the final JAWS 10.0.1151 release and the JAWS 10.0.1154 posting. All enhancements since the initial public beta release are included in this release. For a list of enhancements and improvements in previous JAWS 10 releases, see earlier JAWS enhancements.

Resolved an issue where JAWS would not properly read the playlist window in the latest iTunes® 8 automatic update.

Resolved a reported issue with how JAWS worked with the Track Changes feature in Word. Speech and braille were not working correctly for any markups once the view was set to Final.

Use Check for Updates

To use the check for updates feature of JAWS do the following:

Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS application window.

Press ALT+H to open the Help menu.

JAWS 10.0.1151 Update Released

The following is a list of items addressed between the final JAWS 10.0.1142 release and the JAWS 10.0.1151 posting. All enhancements since the initial public beta release are included in this release. For a list of enhancements and improvements in previous JAWS 10 releases, see earlier JAWS enhancements.

Resolved an issue in Internet Explorer 8 where the JAWS Scripts that control reading and navigating the address bar with INSERT+A and INSERT+A twice quickly had stopped working. These commands are very useful when you want URL information without moving your Virtual Cursor from your reading position on the Web page. These scripts continue to work correctly in Internet Explorer 7 and Internet Explorer 6.

JAWS correctly reads and speaks the column and field titles in Access 2007 database tables. For example, when you press INSERT+TAB while focus is in an Access table cell (field), JAWS will now announce all field information such as the column name, the field contents, and any other associated tutor message. Previously, the column name information was not mentioned, or it was necessary to press ALT+TAB to leave and then return to the application in order to hear the complete field information.

When you use the UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to navigate by line in the Virtual Viewer while in Access 2007, JAWS now speaks each line. Previously, JAWS would only speak the line of text when you pressed INSERT+UP ARROW to read the current line.

The 64-bit version of JAWS 10 now correctly tracks focus when running Microsoft Windows 7.

When you select text using SHIFT+LEFT ARROW or SHIFT+RIGHT ARROW, such as in the File name edit field of the Open dialog box, JAWS now announces each character as it is selected. Previously, JAWS would just say the word “Selected” without announcing the character.

When composing a new e-mail message using Outlook Express 6, JAWS will now announce the words “Edit, type in text” when you move into the message body using TAB or CTRL+GRAVE. Previously, JAWS would say “Edit, read only.”

When talking in a Freedom Scientific Webinar training session, you can use the ALT+L command to lock and unlock the Talk key. This command now functions correctly with the Webinar conference software plug-in that you must install the first time you attend a training session.

Resolved several HTML issues when using JAWS with Libera System 7 Framework™ solutions software.

Use Check for Updates

To use the check for updates feature of JAWS do the following:

Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS application window.

Press ALT+H to open the Help menu.

JAWS 10.0.1142 Update Released

The following is a list of items addressed between the final JAWS 10.0.1139 release and the JAWS 10.0.1142 posting.

The Yahoo Instant Messenger.jss script file has been updated and included in JAWS 10 to provide support for the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9. Make sure to download the latest Yahoo! Messenger for full compatibility with JAWS 10.

The message history in AOL Instant Messenger and the e-mail messages in the Gmail Inbox are now visible to JAWS. Previously, the virtual buffer would appear to be blank if you tried to read message history or Inbox messages.

When navigating through the Gmail Inbox, you can once again select and open an e-mail message by pressing ENTER when focus is on the text in the Subject column. In a previous release, it was necessary to turn off the Virtual Cursor or use the JAWS cursor to open the e-mail message.

Resolved an issue related to certain Web pages with frames, which, when updated, created a situation where JAWS would not read the text present in the updated frame. This problem was reported for both Gmail and the Webinar software used by the Freedom Scientific Training department for the new Webinars, both free and paid, now being offered.

The default JAWS dictionary file (default.jdf) has been updated to include the correct pronunciation of two Russian symbols.

In the JAWS help file, the Using the JAWS Cursor topic now describes the Real Window and the Focus Window restriction options that are available for the JAWS Cursor. Previously, this topic only mentioned the Application Window, Current Window, Unrestricted, and Frame restrictions.

Use Check for Updates

To use the check for updates feature of JAWS do the following:

Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS application window.

Press ALT+H to open the Help menu.

Press P to select Check for Updates. The update feature determines if you have the most current release. If you do not, select one or more items from the list and then select INSTALL to begin the update.
JAWS Tandem Announced in September FSCast Podcast

This month, FSCast unveils JAWS Tandem™, as Jonathan Mosen speaks with Eric Damery, Freedom Scientific's Vice President of Software Product Management, in advance of the second public beta of JAWS 10. During the August FSCast, Eric hinted at a coming new feature that would be disclosed in the September FSCast.

JAWS Tandem is included in the JAWS 10 Public Beta two, to be released in the next few days.

JAWS Tandem is a great new feature introduced in JAWS 10 that allows two computers running JAWS to connect to each other. Tandem allows one of the computer users to take control of the other computer. The user at the controlling computer controls the target computer using a combination of speech, keyboard, video, and braille. The target user can hear and participate in the session as desired. The target user has the ultimate control over the session, and can terminate the session at any time. This is a great new tool for technical support, remote script writing, trouble shooting, remote training, or just helping out a friend with their PC. JAWS Tandem is a significant new feature that will change the way many JAWS users receive support and assistance.

Tandem sessions can take place using the Internet with Tandem Center or over a local network with Tandem Direct. You can find JAWS Tandem controls under the Utilities menu of the JAWS application window. For information and procedures describing how to use this feature, refer to the Quick Start Guide in the JAWS Tandem submenu.

JAWS Navigation Quick Keys in Microsoft Word

JAWS® screen reading software has Navigation Quick Keys for Microsoft® Word that provide you with an easy and efficient way to move through a document. Quickly move the insertion point to a number of different page elements, including headings, footnotes, endnotes, comments, tables, form fields, pages, sections, and more, with simple keystrokes. This feature is similar to the Navigation Quick Keys JAWS uses in Internet Explorer, but is especially designed to help you navigate Word documents.

Navigation Quick Keys are automatically enabled while you are reading with the SayAll command. If you want to use this feature when not performing the SayAll command, press INSERT+Z. Then, use the keystrokes to move the insertion point to the next or previous page element of the given type. To turn off Navigation Quick Keys, press INSERT+Z again. JAWS also turns off Navigation Quick Keys if you switch from one Word document to another document, or to another program.

Visit the JAWS Navigation Quick Keys in Microsoft Word training page for:

Word 2003 and Word 2007 documents for practice using Navigation Quick Keys

Keystrokes listing the Navigation Quick Keys available with Microsoft Word

Information on the new JAWS 10 Navigation Quick Key manager

JAWS 8.0.2173 Update is Now Available

JAWS® screen reading software update version 8.0.2173 is now available for download from the Web. This is an official release for Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Vista™. If you are an existing JAWS 8.0 user, go to the JAWS Help menu and choose Check for Updates to get the latest version downloaded and installed. You may also visit the JAWS downloads page and get the full version download from there. Enhancements in JAWS Version 8.0.2173 (21 June 2007) include:

JAWS

Freedom Scientific is proud to announce that JAWS 8.0 has officially completed its public beta test cycle with Windows Vista.
The feedback the public provided was extremely helpful, and, as a result of the reports provided, we addressed many issues ensuring that JAWS 8 is working smoothly and seamlessly with Vista. While not every comment and suggestion could be addressed at this time, we have incorporated many changes already for JAWS 9, coming out in September 2007.

Resolved an issue reported by the public where two versions of JAWS for Windows were active when a UAC dialog box opened in Windows Vista.

In Windows Vista, the WINDOWS Key+SPACEBAR keystroke brings the Sidebar and all gadgets to the foreground. If the Sidebar is not running when you issue this keystroke, JAWS explains how to launch it. For example, JAWS says that you have to type the word "sidebar" in the Run dialog box.

When focus is on the Clock gadget of the Windows Vista Sidebar, JAWS correctly updates the time automatically. This allows JAWS to provide the proper time without having to move away from the gadget and back again.

Through a collaboration between Freedom Scientific and IBM,
JAWS now successfully works with Host on Demand (HOD), a JAVA-based
terminal emulation application that many companies are now deploying
in place of PCOMM. JAWS is the only screen reader that works with HOD.

JAWS does not crash when the text string "c a e s u r e" is spoken.

JAWS now speaks messages associated with the JAWS clipboard, the CTRL+C command, and the WINDOWS Key+C command when a User Access Control (UAC) dialog appears.

The updated Papenmeier braille driver is included in this release.

The latest Handy Tech driver, version 3.0.1.13, is included in this release.

Fixed reported issues where JAWS, running in Windows Vista, would not automatically read certain static text when using the INSERT+B keystroke.

The GetRegistryEntryDWord script works correctly when JAWS is run as a service.

The MAGic 6.2 keyboard layout option has been removed from JAWS.

Internet Explorer

Resolved an issue for the Social Security Administration where JAWS was not speaking hidden text that appeared on some of their HTML pages.

Lotus Notes

JAWS, when running as a service, can successfully read Lotus Notes e-mail messages.

Microsoft Excel 2007

When ESC is pressed to exit a comment, JAWS confirms that focus is back on the worksheet by announcing and displaying the active cell in braille.

JAWS correctly speaks and shows in braille split buttons that appear in the Microsoft Excel ribbon.

JAWS correctly announces cell comment information when moving from the beginning or end of the comment.

When using the LEFT ARROW and RIGHT ARROW keys to navigate by character, JAWS now reads text as expected in the Parameters dialog of Microsoft Excel 2007.

Fixed an Excel 2007 issue reported by Microsoft where JAWS would read extra information when navigating Context menus.

Microsoft Office 2007

When screen-sensitive help (INSERT+F1) is issued for split buttons, JAWS now announces the correct help message for the selected control type.

JAWS speaks as expected when it encounters a spelling error related to capitalization in Word 2007 and Outlook 2007. Previously, JAWS would say "blank" twice.

JAWS correctly reads the Context menu when the Applications key is pressed in an Office 2007 application.

Microsoft Outlook 2007

When in the header of an e-mail message, pressing ALT+GRAVE moves the cursor to the message body field.

JAWS speaks the e-mail message that is highlighted in the Inbox as you move up and down the message list using the UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW keys.

JAWS correctly reads text when you run the Spelling and Grammar function after pasting text from a Word 2007 document into a new e-mail message.

JAWS functions correctly when using the Previous Message command (CTRL+COMMA) or the Next Message command (CTRL+PERIOD) in Outlook 2007.

When using TAB or SHIFT+TAB to navigate through the Spelling and Grammar dialog box, JAWS correctly speaks and shows in braille the buttons, check boxes, and list boxes that appear in this dialog box.

As you use the UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW keys to navigate through the Folder list in Outlook 2007, JAWS correctly says the name of the folders.

JAWS correctly reads RSS feeds messages that are opened using Outlook 2007.

Microsoft Outlook 2003

JAWS correctly speaks e-mail rules that appear in the Rules Wizard for Microsoft Outlook 2003.

When using the Say Line command (INSERT+UP ARROW), JAWS now reads the correct information when the auto-complete function inserts an e-mail address in the To edit field.

First letter navigation works for Folder List view in Outlook 2003.

Microsoft Word 2007

By default, when you open the Ribbon toolbar, the cursor is placed on the Home tab. The letter H in the word Home now appears in braille.

JAWS correctly handles repeated words that appear as misspelled words when running spell check in a Microsoft Word 2007 document.

When a document is protected from unintentional editing, the context-sensitive help (INSERT+F1) associated with the read-only status is now correctly reported.

When the Verbosity Spelling and Grammar function is turned on, JAWS correctly reports misspelled words as you navigate forward and backward using the INSERT+LEFT ARROW and INSERT+RIGHT ARROW keystrokes.

JAWS speaks the title bar when the Spell Checker function is launched in Microsoft Word.

When Hot key Help (INSERT+H) is turned on for the Spelling and Grammar dialog box, the UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW keys now allow you to navigate up and down in the Virtual Viewer.

Windows Mail

JAWS recognizes graphics associated with attachments when using Windows Mail, which is available in Windows Vista.

Windows Update

JAWS can now use the JAWS cursor to read text in areas of Windows Vista where previously it could not.
