Sounds, Voices, and Verbosity on the PAC Mate
Opening the Settings
Press the WINDOWS Key+S to open Settings on the PAC
Mate. (hear example)
Sound Settings
Press S to open the settings for Sounds. Press ENTER.
A dialog page will open where you can change five sound settings:
- Volume control. To change the volume, press the UP
and DOWN ARROWS in the desired direction. Press TAB to
move to the next setting. (hear example)
- Events, warnings, and system sounds. A sound may
be set by checking or unchecking the box next to an option. To check
or uncheck a sound, press the SPACEBAR. Press TAB to move
to the next setting.
- Program sounds. A sound may be set by checking or
unchecking the box next to an option. To check or uncheck a sound for
a program, press the SPACEBAR. If a box is unchecked for a program,
the on/off sounds are turned off. Press TAB to move to the next
setting.
- Notifications, alarms, and reminder sounds. A sound
may be set by checking or unchecking the box next to an option. To check
or uncheck a sound for a program, press the SPACEBAR.. If the
box for notifications, alarms, and reminders is set to "off,"
no alarms will sound. Press TAB to move to the next setting.
- Screen "tap" sounds. Again, check or uncheck
the box for "screen taps" by pressing the SPACEBAR.
If the box for screen taps sounds is checked, you will hear a clicking
noise when each key is pressed.

Voice Settings
Press V to open the settings for voice. Press ENTER.
There are three settings you may change for voice:
- Adjust global voice. You have five choices
- global voice, message voice, keyboard voice, PC cursor voice, and
JAWS cursor voice. If the global voice is picked, the changes will
affect all voices, and there is no option to change the type of voice. If
anything else but global is picked, you can change the voice type.
- Rate. A rate slider will automatically open, allowing
you to adjust the rate of speed for the voice.To change the speed, press
the UP ARROW for faster, the DOWN ARROW for slower. If
you would like the speed to go much faster or slower, press
the PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys, respectively. Press TAB
to move to the next setting.
- Voices. You have eight voice choices. To choose a
voice, move among the choices by pressing the UP and DOWN
ARROWS . When you have found the voice you want, press ENTER.
Press TAB to move to the next setting.
- Pitch. You may choose to control the pitch of speech.
There are two ways to change pitch:
- Capital letters: If you select "Upper case pitch
increment," this will change the pitch of capital letters when
you type them.
- Punctuation combo box: This changes how much punctuation is
spoken (all, most, some, and none). (hear

Press TAB to move to the OK button and close Voice settings.
Verbosity Settings
Press V to open the settings for Verbosity. (After you
press S for settings, the first press of V is verbosity,
the second press of V goes to voices.) Press ENTER.
There are three settings you can change under verbosity:
- Beginner to intermediate to advanced. You can choose
how much JAWS tells you based on how advanced you are as a user. The
advanced option allows the least amount of verbiage from JAWS. Press
the DOWN ARROW to change the level. Press TAB to move
to the next setting.
- Tutor messages. You may turn this option on or off
by leaving it checked or unchecked, respectively. To check or uncheck
it, press the SPACEBAR. Turning on tutor messages on will give
you much more information from JAWS. Press TAB to move to the
next setting.
- Access keys. You may also turn on access keys by
leaving this option checked or unchecked. To check or uncheck it, press
the SPACEBAR. Access keys are the underlined letters on a menu
option or dialog box. Press TAB to the OK button when you are
finished. (hear example)
Press ENTER to exit the settings for sound, voice, and
verbosity.
