Front

Hooks for a strap are in the front of the PAC Mate.

Back

With the PAC Mate facing you, you will find the following seven items along the Back of the PAC Mate, from left to right in the following order:

  1. Rocker switch - a power switch to turn the unit on or off. Switch it left to turn it on, right to turn it off.
  2. Power jack for AC power adapter - where you will plug in the power cord.
  3. A USB port, above and left - for peripherals or other devices with a USB plug.
  4. First CompactFlash® slot.
  5. Second CompactFlash® slot.
  6. Infrared port (in the shape of a square window ).
  7. Rectangular indentation with two jacks: a microphone jack, and a headphone jack (closest to the edge of the PAC Mate).

Below is a graphic that shows where the different slots and buttons are:

Top

The top of the PAC Mate BX includes a braille keyboard, a cursor cross for navigation, function keys, and an internal speaker and microphone.

The speaker is an indented, round area just to the left of the DOT 7 key, while the area for the microphone is a slightly curved, raised, area to the right of  DOT 8.

Keyboard

The PAC Mate BX keyboard is a Perkins-style braille keyboard, with the spacebar located in the middle, and slightly below the braille input keys.  When using the spacebar, be sure to press on either edge, rather than in the middle.

To the left of the SPACEBAR, are DOTS 1, 2, 3, and 7.

To the right of the spacebar are DOTS 4, 5, 6, and 8.

In between the dots, and just above the spacebar, is a four-way cursor cross, used on the PAC Mate BX for navigation, just like the arrow keys on a regular keyboard.

Above the braille input keys are a set of function keys, which follow the same number layout as the braille keys. Above DOT 1, you have F1, and above DOT 4, you have F4. These function keys are used for different commands and options on the PAC Mate BX. These commands will be described in later sections.

Bottom

Two items are on the bottom of the PAC Mate:: the Reset button and a lever to lock or unlock a braille display.

To find the reset button, turn the PAC Mate upside down. Locate the left side middle rubber pad. Just to the left of this rubber pad is a small, round protuberance with a hole. This is the reset button.

The release lever for the drawer and braille display is located on the bottom of the PAC Mate BX, just in front of the far right rubber pad.
