FSEdit

Why use FSEdit?

FSEdit is a word processing tool. While it has the same features as other word processing tool, it also has the ability to export or print documents in braille. This is a program created by Freedom Scientific.

To get to FS Edit

Press the F4. Press P for Programs, then Press F until you reach FSEdit. Or press F6.

Using FS Edit

When a new file is opened, a dialog box asks “Would you like to make your new file a Grade 2 braille document?” Press TAB to "Yes" or "No".

You can use FSEdit like you do any other word processing tool. Below are some common FSEdit functions. Use our practice text on your PAC Mate to get comfortable with the functions.

Practice Text (cut and paste the text below into an FSEdit document or open the practice text file):

This is a test document.
This is the First line.
This is the second line.
This is the third line.

Keys for reading the document:

To read one character at a time:

  • Press DOT 3 CHORD to go back one character.
  • Press DOT 3-6 CHORD for current character.
  • Press DOT 6 CHORD to go forward one character.

To read one word at a time:

  • Press DOT 2 CHORD to go back one word.
  • Press DOTS 2-5 CHORD to hear the current word.
  • Press DOT 5 CHORD to go forward one word.

To read one line at a time:

  • PressDOT 1 CHORD to go back one line.
  • Press DOT 1-4 CHORD to hear the current line.
  • Press DOT 4 CHORD to go forward one line.

To run spell checker:

Press Alt, then use the arrow key to move to Tools. Press ENTER.
It automatically lands on spell checker because that is the first option, so press ENTER. (hear example)

Once you press ENTER, the first misspelled word will be found. To hear suggestions besides the first one for corrections, press TAB. Use the arrow keys to move through the choices. When you find the one you want, press ENTER.

To make the change and move to the next misspelled word, press TAB or Alt+C.

Saving a File

To save, press F2 to open the File menu then to Save As.

You are first in the field to ENTER the "Name" of the file. After naming it, press TAB to move to "Folder" to select which folder you want it in.

Once you choose a location, press TAB to move to "Type" to choose the format to save the file in. There are five choices: .fsd, .brf, .rtf, .psw, .txt. If you plan to print in braille, save the file in the .brf format. Use the arrow keys to move through the choices.

After choosing a format, press TAB to move to "Location." This lets you choose to save the file to main memory or storage card if you have a storage card.

Finally, press TAB again. You are now on the OK button and can press ENTER to save.
