FREEDOM SCIENTIFIC INTRODUCES WYNN™
5 SOFTWARE
Industry Firsts and Patented Technology Lead Market in Providing
Literacy Software Optimized for Web Access & Learning
Palo Alto, CA – May 22, 2006 -- The Learning Systems Group
of Freedom Scientific, Inc., developer of literacy software designed
to create custom learning environments for struggling students,
announced today the release of the newest version of WYNN software.
WYNN 5 brings unprecedented advancements in the delivery of Web-based
content to individuals who struggle to read. This first-of-its kind
product assists special education students with reading Internet
content, and gives them important study tools to help them learn
in a Web-based environment.
Students are increasingly accessing the Internet to study and
learn. According to the Pew
Internet & American Life Project, 43 million U.S. children
under age 18 use the Internet. And 94% of them between the ages
of 12 – 17 have used the Internet for school. Freedom Scientific’s
Learning Systems Group, with the development of this latest version
of WYNN optimized for Internet-based studying and learning, is demonstrating
its commitment to remain at the forefront in providing support to
students who struggle, wherever they are learning.
Literacy Support Tools Help Struggling Students Read the Internet
WYNN 5 is the first product that fully integrates all the support
capabilities of a powerful literacy software program into the Internet,
rather than merely superimposing "floating" tool bars
on the text. With WYNN 5, students can have Web text read out loud
as well as access the study tools that they rely on for their traditional
classroom work, like dictionary and highlighting features. WYNN
5 is also the only software that offers struggling students WebMasking™.
This patented feature highlights selected text on a Web page by
line, sentence or paragraph while blocking out distracting elements
like advertisements. This enables the reader to better focus, read
and comprehend text.
WYNN 5 is also the only software allowing users to highlight several
pieces of selected text on the Internet and extract that highlighted
text directly into a single document with one mouse click; no cut
and paste required.
Other new WYNN 5 features include:
- Redesigned browser module to support students in reading and
studying
- Updated Web Toolbar for easier navigation; users can easily
switch among open documents and see and hear Favorites and History
lists
- Ability to study and work within WebCT and other educational
courseware sites
- Redesigned speech interface permitting the use of the many
human-sounding SAPI 5 speech technologies giving users the comfort
of their choice of synthesizer
- Enhanced printing options
- Built in Pop-up Blocker to minimize distractions
- Reads Internet e-mail
- Talking online form completion
- Compatible with Flash and Java Applets
"Support for struggling students is no longer limited to text
books," said Elaine Huot, M.Ed., Educational Consultant and
Language Specialist. "Using WYNN 5, students can broaden their
resource base to include material on the Web. Coupled with the WebMasking
feature, my students can better focus on and comprehend Web material.
It is a lifeline for many students that WYNN 5 now extends its multi-sensory
approach to assist all learning styles in working more effectively
with the Web."
"People have always been able to copy and paste a block of
text from the Internet. But what if text is needed from multiple
places on a Web page? Until now, one would have to copy and paste
four or five times. Using WYNN's Web Highlighting and Extraction
features, students can copy multiple pieces of information in one
mouse click. This will save time and effort as well as minimize
distractions, something students care deeply about," said Roberta
Brosnahan, VP and General Manager, Learning Systems Group.
WYNN 5 Presents a Clean, Uncluttered Web Page
Students with learning differences have greater success with WYNN
because it presents text in a clean and uncluttered format. Imagine
what it’s like for a student who struggles to read a normal
text book, to have to read and comprehend information on a Web page
that is packed with information and graphics, advertising and animated
elements. WYNN 5’s design ensures that students with learning
disabilities have opportunities for academic success with their
traditional school materials as well as Web-based materials.
WYNN 5 users may also access all standard WYNN features which include:
- Seeing & hearing text simultaneously
- Ability to visually customize text pages for easier reading
- Extensive study tools including Spell Check, Highlighting,
Text Note, Voice Note, Dictionary and Thesaurus
- Ability to access virtually any type of text including printed
pages electronic text, Web sites or PDF
